Older Monkeys Get More Selective About Companions

Scientists studying Barbary macaques at the La Forêt des Singes Park in Rocamadour, France noted that older monkeys tended to be pickier about who they interacted with but were still interested in the social information around them.

The Prisms above our Hearts

Tell me why the sky is blue
Light refracting off the vapor
In the atmosphere you'd say
Blue's the color of our pain
At losing love and even life
On a dark and forlorn day

Tell me why the bull sees red
And angers him to charge my way
It's not the color but the cape
Waving in his face you say
Red's the color of alarm
Warning us in it's own way
So you might read these words one day

Tell me why the trees are green
Waving on a windy day
It's the chlorophyll that makes them green
That's what I thought you'd say
But who dances life into new borns?
The fairy's skin is green as well
The color of the wood nymph's hair

Tell me why the world is black
And brown with streaks of red and grey
Black is the color of scorched burnt earth
Brown and red are vulcanism
And grey is the nuclear winter
An ash filled atmosphere at day
I'm not surprised at what you'd say

Tell me how things have come to this?
But now your silence says much more
Those are the colors of a world at bay
Black and brown
And red with grey
Ready for life anew some day
Where human folly reigns no more

And what is the color of dreams to be?
Of those evolved beyond what we
As humans with all our trappings
Would no longer see
Like the magic of the rainbow
Or the mystery of the deep blue sea

"Psychologists have long accepted that the decrease in social activity of humans is due to a recognition of mortality. But having this trait show up in monkeys flips the script. Instead of humans thinking their time is short so they have to make the best of it, maybe they start limiting their social interactions first and then reason later that it’s because they’re aging. Which would imply that this behavior was preferentially selected for in our primate ancestors....

Get off my lawn but go stand on the sidewalk so I can still hear the gossip."

Hush-hush -- The Monkeys are Lending (their ears) -- Know what I mean?

In street shoes, with no warm up.

You know the drill.

They had a drill where they had to dribble up and back on the court as fast as possible. Spud always won, even when he used two balls and the other guys used one.

You don't think about it.

You just tell 'em to get on board and pray to St. Chris.

Sorta like gettin' on a big wave.

The Boyd Scout Family picks up hitchhikers all the time. But they are prepared. They know the drill.

Boyd always begins like this:

"Buckle up, please. Where can we drop you today?"

Meanwhile, one of the kids is sharpening her teeth with an emery while watching her image in a hand-held phone screen, and the other is engrossed in Slow Death Comics. He has to sit next to them. Boyd has mounted a sturdy 12-ga in the front passenger side. And the glove box is loaded with a can of Mace. This is only "prevent" mode.

The police band chatters merrily and the wifey does, too--mostly about sales and coupons and dirty jokes that would curl the hair on Mother Theresa, but this is the best weapon in the family arsenal. Generally, hitchers opt to get out before their destination rather than hear any more of her inane banter, but they are REALLY EMBARRASSED by the jokes!

But the clan moves people around, doing their bit to alleviate traffic in their metropolis, fulfilling their Christian duty. Such a dedicated family. And safe, too!

It was hard to get the public carry permit for the shotgun, but Boyd's insurance agent is the pastor of his church and he greased the wheels for him. He fully approves the idea but thinks he chose the wrong model. He prefers a Browning pump over Boyd's Mossburg. Meh.

I searched diligently for a still from the movie of Henry Stamper's middle finger from the last scenes of the movie when the logs are being run down the river to the mill. No luck.

So I gotta go with these, which express old Henry's feelings just as well. (My apology-in-advance to neebee.)
Hope all goes smoothly regarding your dad's situation, young Dwain.

It's good to hear how you're sharing the good fight with your dad, Cosmic.
We are all so fortunate to hold our loved ones close for a time in this tumultuous world.

Peanut Butter Sandwich Days

I have shoes upon my ears
To walk upon my head
As I listen to the ground
For the spirit of the dead
But the dead don't talk to me
And they never make a sound
Though the feet upon my legs
Can barely touch the ground

And the knot within my throat
Winds around and round
Until my beady little eyes
They turn from blue to brown
And the skies are misty white
Like the milk beyond the clouds
As my peanut butter sandwich days
Are always counting down

I never cared to cry, when over at the show, either.

The man's life - the sum of heart beats ~ breaths in & out

I took his hand we were together, alone we had not been t

Together alone in years but not a decade,

it had been a sad occasion then

now again in labored breathing

sight ?

As the very end drew, , , , he knew....

He gasped, , ,a giant body shaking seizure,

In a stirring of the bed sheet, a gasp,

Ghastly last gasp,

it scared me , I recoiled in. ???

Some of us are doomed to fight for every last breath

My last words, spoken, (I sang some thing after,)

" We're some sort, aren't we? No trail for us! We see that hard way!
Straight up, that's a wall, then if not then through it!
No point always the hard way? Even now ?
Dad, -hey the hard way huh!
Always the hardest way,
You can stop now dad,
Ok , dad, ok , ok ok

This is a dark place, not anyone dwells in

brackish water, needed to be wadded,

passing, the eddying, floaters,
( for me: tubes n beeping of respiratory status machines )

Feeling the crap n solids just under the surface

Getting to the clear flowing water,

what has been, bad and good now at last

Past

It Only happens at the few times,

wadding into the froth to stand

Alone together

There is a long held tradition,

songs sung when,
A
fathers last breaths
Come

They call me Waldorf Pigeon

And I’m crazy as a loon:

I love to go out dancing

By the light of the full moon.

I ‘ve danced upon the rooftops

Of the palaces of kings;

All along their watchtowers

Have I spread my shadow wings.

And it always blows my mind

As the moon moves east to west:

My shadow does not follow--

It’s reversed...I do not jest!
