I didn't know the guy and I have never owned a stick of his furniture and I have never had a Swedish meatball in my life.

I can't say that any of my friends have any of his products in their home, because, I suppose, I have so few friends who I visit anymore.

But Ingvar Kamprad was one of the richest people in the world. He was ranked No. 8 on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which estimated his worth at $58.7 billion.

It is estimated that one in ten Europeans were conceived in an Ikea bed.

Ingvar died today at the age of 91.

I am wondering if Ikea, which uses @ 1% of the world's lumber, make coffins.

Or will he be cremated?

marlow, and all ... have you seen a movie, sean penn as a gifted guitarist obsessed with django,
and "taken" with a young mute women played by samantha morton, called "sweet and lowdown?"

Woody Allen cast her as Hattie, the "dumb" (unspeaking) lover of Sean Penn's caddish jazz guitarist in Sweet and Lowdown (1999), a beautiful performance in a role that could have flummoxed a less-talented performer. Penn was Oscar-nominated for his performance, but it was Morton's Hattie that was central to the success of the film, Allen's last unqualified success. She provided the moral and narrative center of the film. It was quite a remarkable performance for a 21-year old as she had to do all her acting with her face, having been shorn of her voice. The role of Hattie won Morton a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nomination.

Ironically, Morton had never seen a Woody Allen movie before. (She grew up watching the TV and listening to the radio.) She agreed to do the film after reading the script (as she says, well-written roles for women are hard to find), and the movie made her a hot commodity in Hollywood after she won the Oscar nomination. (She lost out to the ultra-hyped Angelina Jolie). Morton was offered many roles, but was very choosy as she was not in acting as a game with a payoff of stardom and money.

it's highly recommended by me!

as an aside ... the screen actors guild has a few rules. one is, not having any "lines" in a
movie means no top or second or any billing whatsoever. go ahead and be nominated
as best (sportin') actress that year ... you get a place at the top of the "party goers"
listed in the imdb database of cast members. sad

she was great ... without a spoken word

edit: netflix at least! hi mouse, glad you're banging on the keys

Allen Stewart Konigsberg has me thinking about gratitude. Actually, Woody Allen has me thinking about gratitude. But before Woody Allen was Woody Allen, he was Allen Stewart Konigsberg.

Gratitude is flooding my frontal lobes because I just caught his latest film To Rome With Love. I’m not exactly grateful for seeing the movie, although it was very Woody Allen~ish and my Mom found it “cute.” What I’m referring to is the voiceover near the movie’s end, declaring the director’s distinctive worldview that “Life is cruel and unsatisfying, whether you’re a celebrity or whether you are poor and unknown.” When I heard the line, I thought the only thing next to laughter that saves us from life’s drab, disappointing nature is to cultivate a quality of thankfulness for all it offers. Even and perhaps especially in the face of pain. Because what life offers us isn’t all negative, and focusing on the good things in your life puts you in harmony with the Universe, allowing you to attract more of the positive.

Of course, there’s spiritual mastery, and then there are neurotic, atheistic, romantic comedy mastery. “The Universe is merely a fleeting idea in God’s mind,” Woody once pontificated. “A pretty uncomfortable thought, particularly if you’ve just made a downpayment on a house.” While the seemingly wonderful lives of famous writers and moviemakers continue to be a bit of a hot button for me, I’ll keep up the good work by focusing on what’s working well in my life, and continue to keep the transformation engine humming. Who knows where it might lead? Maybe one day I’ll change my name, learn to play the clarinet and enjoy impersonating a giant Brown Recluse. It’s all good and gets better and better when you find the willingness to be happy with what you got. And that’s gratitude.
