The Crab Pot Cafe

Down on Pier 30 where the mugs all go for coffee
You can sit for hours and hours playing nursemaid
To the damsels in distress who float about
In your black brew like yellowish icebergs
Calved from the Plain Glacier
Or like pink or green or red or white
Bergs born of the Sprinkles Glacier.

Don’t overstay your visit
Unless you tip the waitress in advance.

I personally feel like a hero
When I’ve rescued all the little red specks
Of peppers afloat in the corn chowder.
I set them aside on a napkin,
Their own Gilligan’s Isle
But with no Ginger,
Not even Ginger Baker
As they’ve probably had enough Cream.

All the while I toss in Oyster Crackers
As lifeboats for the corn kernels,
All dull yellow and some hollow
But they never climb aboard.
They’ve long ago drowned
So I use the round silver spoon
To collect their bodies
And to bail the liquid.

They have not died in vain
And fill me belly full.

A challenge to keep the lifeboats floating
Until the bodies are all retrieved,
But when they are all safely buried
In my gut I mash them Oyster Cracker boats
And add a few drops of catsup
And eat that followed by a few sips
Of black coffee.

Coffee, donuts, chowder,
Then a sunrise, if I’m lucky,
Over the East Bay hills
As a floor show that
Beats the hell out of anything seen
On Broadway in North Beach.

Don't know what you mean this morning, Bnomeans.

Weird, huh?

Let's get it started with no Black Eyed Peas, but some Genuine Eurythmics, otay?

Doc Love at the VA North Valley Clinic has told me that I ought not to be drinking fruit juice. He says it’s best I drink water as a patient with CHF (congestive heart failure), my main current problem with AF (Atrial Fibrillation) and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).

There are numerous warnings about cranberry juice in the literature given out as information for patients with CHF.

I’ve dumped out all the cranberry-tangerine juice I bought last week on the advice of others, as well. Cranberry juice is a no-no for me, as well, since it is known to prevent Warfarin from being therapeutic. It is hard to control the International Normalized Ratio (INR) which is used to measure the current effectiveness of the Warfarin, which should run in the area of 2.0 – 3.0 to be therapeutic. Cranberry juice is mixed with lots of others and fairly cheap by comparison with other juices.

Notice, I wrote "current problem," because there may be proscriptions on eating currants or drinking currant juice that I am not aware of. Not that I would buy the stuff for the prices they want, which is about $9.00/quart. As bad a sting as pomegranate juice. Nectar of currant, also out of my price range.

Blackcurrants, were once popular in the United States as well, but became less common in the 20th century after currant farming was banned in the early 1900s, when blackcurrants, as a vector of white pine blister rust was considered a threat to the U.S. logging industry.

Antioxidants are found in currant juice and many other juices.

Hah! Big deal. According to Wikipedia,

Although certain levels of antioxidant vitamins in the diet are required for good health, there is considerable debate on whether antioxidant-rich foods or supplements have anti-disease activity. Moreover, if they are actually beneficial, it is unknown which antioxidant(s) are needed from the diet and in what amounts beyond typical dietary intake.[8][9][10] Some authors dispute the hypothesis that antioxidant vitamins could prevent chronic diseases,[8][11] while others maintain such a possibility is unproved and misguided from the beginning.[12]

Antioxidation and irradiation, two modern bugaboos about which we know little, actually. Sheep just graze and get fat. Why don’t we? Salmon just eat raw fish and seafood and get big and fat. Why don’t we?

And there are warnings on the use of Simvastatin, which I take nightly, unless I forget to do so, with grapefruit juice. I buy grapefruit juice about as often as I drink grappa, which is never.

I’ve never had grappa, but I used to like a Planter’s Punch now and then, back in the eighties when I drank constantly and copiously at La Hacienda on the corner of G and Olive, now a Pizza Hut, not a popular Mexican restaurant. The days of the Eurythmics and Pet Shop Boys and Rush and Def Leppard.

Would I lie to you?

Beatle Bones 'n' Rolling Stones
--Capt. Beefheart

Beatle bones ‘n’ smokin’ Stones
The dry sands fall
The strawberry mouth; strawberry moth; strawberry caterpillar
Strawberry butterfly; strawberry fields
The winged eel slither on the heels of today’s children
Strawberry feels forever

Yeah, roosters, ol’ glass roosters, stick to your race
In a drag-queen, live-wood farmhouse
Tractors are clawin’; the folks are crawlin’
Trees in a row climbing a coach and I blow rich
Red, blue, yellow sunset
Where I set and you set; and I’ve loved and you’ve loved
And I’ve seen and you’ve seen

Salt Man has just made his mark – and crumbled
The dark – the light – the dark – the day
Porcelain children see through white lights
Soft-cracker bats, Cheshire cats named
The Dark – the Light – the Dark – the Day

Blue veins through gray-felt tomorrows
Cellular sail-boat – ye ole feathered kind
Blow it into a pond swayin’ in circles
Red, blue, yellow sunset.
Where I’ve set and you’ve set; and I’ve loved and you’ve loved
What I saw and you saw
Strawberry feels forever

you have to look quick, but Rudy can be scene here

sometimes, even a hat will not allow you to know someone

rumoured to be the inspiration for one of Jerry Garcia's ties

I don't know, maybe it was the roses

I've got some, but man it's been a long time since I wore one

That Jerry foto is very rare, he hardly ever wore tie-dye

These may be the only extant fotos of Rudy without shades, then again maybe not

Gracias, Tim. How sweet of you. :0)

faced with decaf

i'd rather not die from a heart attack
and i wish i could take all that coffee back

i always took it very black
and left the sugar in the sack

with coffee in me i'd yack and yack
and confuse the pins on my climbing rack

Curry Hurry in days gone back
of free refills there was no lack

And then there was the JT free coffee thing back when.
