GQ, no less!!!!!

Accomazzo: The headbands were utilitarian—style was certainly secondary.
We all had long hair, and when you’re climbing you’ve got to keep it out of your eyes.
You wear these white pants so they reflect the sun and they’re noticeably cooler when you’re up on a hot Yosemite wall.
So white pants and headbands were de rigueur, but they had a prime utilitarian purpose.

Graham: We were definitely inspired by the Bruce Lee character.
He was so inspiring because he was so athletic.
What you could see him do was just mind-boggling, and we all would apply those ideas to climbing.

for what its worth this video needs to be skipped.

The picture heading the video is of Ed Brandes.

add Eddy to your vast accumulation OF WORTHY SOULS

A fine man whos' story is brushed out, (only a bit - itz cool)

It shows some scenes of New Paltz, from 1990, at 15;14 minutes in,

where starts an interview of The Sweet Street Sweeper, of New Paltz,
& my old friend, Ed.
It is hard to watch, and all most impossible to understand

F, Good on'ya Eddy!
You were the palette of the unseen artist.
the supreme poetry of the extreme life you lived,
a forever forgotten story.

IT SEEMS WEIRD NOW BUT THIS PART OF TOWN HAS A NEW PALTZ FEEL TO IT,

Guild Of Poets

The poet of mud
sets his pots of goo
out before him
and people walk past
looking at their futures
but they are in earth tones
too murky and indistinct
to be recognizable

The cave poet
paints underground comics
and charges free admission
but you must be a tourist
from the future
no torches please in the cave
and wear minimal clothing
and take nothing too seriously

The poet of the aged
knows when to be silent
and what not to compose
for he is just another elder
reliving the time he spent
living as a younger man
with his future all bright and golden

The poet guarding secrets
stares blankly at the fire
hardly ever blinking
shaking his head side to side
and then up and down
until the fire burns itself out
and then gets up and goes home

The poet of the gods
really has nothing to say
that humans will understand
and so we skip him
and besides he calls himself
a priest but he’s just a fakir

The poet is as much a part of life
as the shaman
or the midwife
or the hunter
or the mentor
or the parents
or the artists*

There's a splendid rain here this morning.

I've got to get to the store for pain relievers.

There's been a constant nagging ache in the left upper leg,
much like a charlie horse, for two nights "running" (haha)
and I forgot to buy a new supply of Tylenol or the like when at the store two nights back.

Fortunately, at the Cinema this morning, breakfast was on the house,
thanks to mein host, Gerardo, so I'm calling a taxi.

IF there is a god, HE may be watching out for me.

Hope you are over the worst of your illness, DMT.

Cheers to YOU, nawmean?

I just want to say it is 7 degrees outside, wind chill?, dont stand in the wind,
my windows date back to goldline days and its all base board electric heat, forgot to leave the cabinet doors open,
or some one closed them and the sink froze

I kinda droped a stinker im thinking of deletion? When?
well, it was hard to turn that into inspiration.
The thing is that I religiosize such specific chance occurrence
maybe true moments of coincidence,
those cosmic flashes of syncopation of the random,

Back from the store. When it rains it pours.

The ride to Grocery Outlet was $4.60. I gave the driver a fiver and we were good.

I had the luck of ordering up a return taxi ride from Andrea, who'd just come on shift and had no small bills.

When we arrived back at Middle Earth, the tab was $5.00 but all I had was a twenty.

She let it ride till we meet again.

Pain relief and economic relief...convenient luck, or, as we call it round here, fate.

My sixth grade girl friend actually tried to have that Baptist Church moved from Otay to Chula Vista, but the locals revolted.

She has experience in this arena. Had a house (purchase price $1.00) moved from one part of town to another. Restored it all so it looks as nice as that taxi cab.

She grew up in the one in front (my name is etched in her closet) and the one she moved is in the back.

She's a shrewd one, that gal. Much of the restoration cost was covered by allowing the historic homes outfit to put it on tour for a few years.

hey there, say, mouse...

as to the leg...

say, how do you sit, at computer?

when i changed my computer set up, to the other room...

i went through various 'aches' and cramps etc, as to:

wrist, ... fixed that...
shoulder... fixed that...
neck... fixed that...
hip... fixed that...
calf... fixed that...

took asking god, how to re set up all these things, and
i had to 'listen' as well, to think on all this...

FINALLY now, the set up is 'easy' on the body now...
had to rearrange, all the equipment here, and the angle,
for sitting, putting the arm, and for typeing, :O

so, see if you are sitting in a bad position, somehow...
hope it might help...

My set-up here is not conducive to good posture, neebee.

I have a chair, straight backed, with no arms, which is a mate to another just like it, but having arms. There is a lip along their front edge that obtrudes into the back of my thighs on each chair and no amount of padding has helped to alleviate the problem. These have served me the last 4.5 years, alternating them now and then.

I most definitely need a new chair, but so far I haven't found one that is not way more expensive than I can afford.

I need to do more scouting around. As Dickens' Mr. Micawber famously said, "Something will turn up."

Gnome, I wanna thank you for posting Eye On New Paltz with the story of Ed Brandes back one page. It's a beautiful and poignant look at a kind man. We should all have that streak of kindness, but that's not the way it works, unfortunately.

"So, Mr. Trump, how did you come to be here in New Paltz?"

"There was a property in the woods that needed to be turned into a paying enterprise. I managed to leverage it from the old geezer who owned it and now it's my private retreat when I'm here. I'm trying to make this place great, as you know. I think I've done a swell job, everyone says so, I don't mind telling you."

I can give you chapter and verse, but in the end what you describe is in so many ways the way that the story went.

A winter of serious proportions came and Ed fell sicker than many of us could stand to see.

Ed was very proud.

He was from birth, the victim of a sect that did not believe in modern medicine, so suffered from childhood Rickets, among other un-attended to, - so grown dire issues.

I dont think it was Polio, but he had pronounced, slight palsy.
He lurched when he walked, swinging his frozen hip. He had some serious hygiene issues. My dogs would go insane, a block away from him.
At various times one or another of us would hold our breath, throw him in the back seat and care for him. it took a village.

As I was telling,
the Lawyers, for the Mohonk Preseve heard tell of the hard winter, Ed's illness, and placement in a care facility.

They (and) got Ed to sign away his home which had back taxes due. The property had much MORE THAN INTRINSIC VALUE;

it was the only private land holding between the public & preserve(private) land.

In trade he got a life at an assisted home and care. . .

I only visited 3 times, it always made us both cry to see one another.

We can be our brothers help,
to a fault some times,
unintended consequences

although Eddy promised me that he did not feel so
& was not cheated out of any thing,

I'll always feel that he would have rather stayed home. . .
I blame myself for dropping the ball,

due to my own troubles
I had to disappear off the face of the planet,
at the same time as so many also need rescue,
back 'round the turn of the century.

The old yellow house in the woods was a true relic, and a well loved landmark for climbers driving past and other way fairing folk.
As the season turned warm, the word seemed to spread that Ed was not home & not coming back...
There is a fair sized gathering of tweekers. A population, that swells, with climber types seasonally, this rabble grew, grew past tolerable.
Some deals were struck, the multi-use free camping that was the adjacent property to Ed's, absorbed his land, tore down the house and closed that whole side of the road to camping 3 or 4 years before closing all the free camping.

There were 7-8 very original "children of the street",

( who? Whom? That? -yikes-, i flubbed that?)

that some of us tried to protect from a rather hard under-belly of other. . . . for want of a better term, homeless. Mostly men, that ruled the dives and squats.
There was a Family, We served free meals, Dinners of pasta, beer and good cheeer. and took folks to get medical care.
We tried to make all our lives better by dragging, sometimes kicking and screaming, lost souls to come to grips...
find an alter, pray, become well, heal'd threw doing, doing anything to make some thing in your immediate sphere of influence better,

hey there, say, mouse... :( try a local thrift store... or, look for a garage sale...

we have one neat thrift store here, where they put 'junky'
stuff out, (not in bad condition, always, but-- not pretty enough
for folks to want...)

and i have gotten chairs for 1.00, 2.00, and
sometimes, even better ones, if i want to pay 4.99

keep an eye out, and we will just pray that a better one shows up, :)

On the face of it, my getting a free ride off Andrea is a good story. There is more that "escaped" my re-cap. I realized my laxity and must set the rest of the story out, briefly.

When we were loading the trunk of her taxi, she remarked on the quality of my walker. I agreed it was a fine one, though it needed a wash. I told her that it had been given to me at no charge, that I had not paid for it, though one might say I had paid for it with my naval service, since it came to me from the VA after my heart surgery.

She went on in the same vein as she drove me home. "Nothing is free, really, is it?" And then the irony came when we arrived at Middle Earth, with her not being able to make change.

Later in the day, I realized that I ought to have suggested she drop by when she had change, call me--my number was on her phone--and I would be glad to take care of the payment.

We seem to sometimes conveniently "forget about" these other things when relating our stories of good fortune. The mind is funny that way, and it's a natural thing. But we, as humans, have the ability to go back and make things right. I can still call the cab company and leave a message for Andrea to call me back. And I hear me telling myself, "But it's the middle of the night."

We've come a long ways, baby, from the jungle where dogs eat dogs, but not that far from the morality plays of the Dark Ages, when the "ignorant peasant" was told how to act in a Christian manner, which is a crock, because we all have light and dark in us and should know which makes us feel good in practical applications. This would be our "consciences," a natural guide to doing the right thing.

I admit to just now awakening from a "bad dream," the first I've had in years, I think. And it was probably a subconscious process brought on by gluttony, by eating WAY TOO MUCH for dinner and after dinner before watching The Godfather again.

It's been over twenty years since I watched it in full. The last time was with my wife Liz, who liked to watch the trilogy in full once a year.

Talk about morality is cheap.

Putting it into action requires payment.

I won't bother telling about my dream. You each have your own stable full of nightmares (Jack Woltz did) and that's enough for now.
