Sounds of the earth too low in frequency to be heard well by human ears.

Safety Bulletin from Cheyne Stokes

Little is left to carry.
The picnic basket is empty.
That’s mine, that’s his, that’s yours.
That’s settled.

No one got drunk at the party.
No one went to the party.
No one belongs to the party any more.
The shrike flew past and no one but Cheyne saw it.

The bottles were non-refundable.
The glass-plastic-aluminum thing won’t make anyone rich.
Taxes. More taxes. Dying from all the taxes.
Bananas can’t compete with the apple jack and apples are cheap.

Taxes.
Airplane dope spilled in the doghouse again.
The dog is getting very high.
More taxes.
Nobody home to take care of Grampa.
Grampa is getting very high.
He's lighting incense, playing with fire again.

No one can afford these taxes.
They can afford new sombreros, though.
They fan the air with their Mexican Hats.
Edward Abbey liked it there in the country for old men.
Grampa, not so much.

The taxes are getting higher and higher with each inhalation.
Throw the goddam empties at the lawyers, the gun-runners and the bankers.
They are all tax dodgers.
We would be better off if they hadn’t been invited.

They stayed home and huffed airplane dope with their doors wide open.
Now the picnic basket is burning.
That airplane dope is volatile.
Who do they think they are with their goddam high taxes?

Cheyne, I’m asking you a question.
Be kind enough to get your nose out of that bag.
Listen...do you hear the shrike?
The shrike is calling saying no taxation without representation.

Take off in five,
four,
three,
two,
one.

Red Peak Tryst

I barely managed the climb from cramp
following her as she ascended
the two thousand three-hungered feet
in a vertical race to mad heights

Bloody nose streaming snot and blood
my lungs wheezing and filling with moisture
it was not easy but not all that big a deal
for I had been there before

She flipped through the register
saw my name and smiled
then looked at me as I slogged the final few feet and frowned
in alarm as I smiled back my crimson smile

Bloody mountain she yelled has no pity for anyone
and I sat and nodded too spent to do much
but cough into my handkerchief
and gulp in mouthfuls of air which wasn’t there

I scrawled a name in the register a pseudonym Creepy Crowley
and she signed it Boyd Atstuff and that we were lovers there on a date
and we scoped the clouds rolling in and cautiously vamoosed
oh so carefully careful not to curse the bloody mountain

That’s What I Thought

Walk on water
Walk on fire
Walk on ice
I chose the latter
Though times I’ve felt
I walked on air

The quick lane line
Was rather long
The back of my t-shirt
Said something rude
The lady behind me
Her nostril wheezed
As she glared it me
My smile would not dissuade her

Hero worship
It’s not for me
Following along
It’s not my thing
Nor keeping up
Or joining in

I had twenty two items
The limit was fifteen
As dreams would go
I was writing a check
While those laser beam eyes
Bore down on my back
From my behind me

Whistling
my own tune
Laughing when
It’s inappropriate
That’s more
My speed

I didn’t say I
Was completely oblivious
But as dreams would go
This movie star lady
What was her name?
Asked me what her friend said
What did she say?

I never cared
What people thought
Never worried about
Breathing my share
There used to be
Enough air

The Just My Luck Club

The line stretched around the corner
and down to the end of the block on Fifty-third
The proctors warned the anxious horde
that there might not be enough potatoes again today

I was near the middle of the line on Franklin Ave
and had been standing there for two hours
My face was set for some baked spuds
but the line crawled like a glacier

When I arrived at the door to the shop
my ration card in hand and my face hopefully cheerful
the large man at the turnstile examined my card
stamped it and said to go on in

I looked around and the shelves were still empty
but the potato bin still had some not very choice items
mealy and shriveled and with sprouting eyes
but still fit to eat if I closed my own

Shopping isn’t what it used to be
and there is no longer a choice of paper or plastic
but that ended years before when the famine peaked
and now things were better but not close to the same

My card said I was entitled to three and no more
so I grabbed the biggest ones eagerly
and the man punched my card and laughed
because here came the truck with a new load of spuds

I once saw a one-armed man in Puyallup.

Besides that, I got nothin', Gnome.

Except, maybe this:

Okner's a creeping pile of something not yet identified.

He does take good photos but that's no excuse for running down his elders.

My day has not gone well. Except the hot water in the building has been restored.

I'm very concerned with my CHF (congestive heart failure) because even increasing the dosage x2 of my diuretic (Furosemide/Lasix) has not helped much with the swelling in my legs or my shortness of breath.

I have packages due tomorrow and want to be here to accept them. Following that, if my physical condition hasn't improved DRASTICALLY, I'm going to have to check myself into the hospital for a time and let them deal with it.

I'm signing off, going to lie down for several hours, sleep if I can, and see what happens.

Later days, folks.

The Nightmare

The insatiable heart, raw and unquenchable by natural inclination, is willing or unwilling to dash itself into danger.

In the dream the house rocked. The impact was so shockingly immediate that it felt like it was outside and away in a different location. But the shuddering boom of an airplane crash left the building looking slightly askew from the inside. There was no other obvious damage I could see.

I ran outside to see what the situation was immediately. The entire building had been shifted on its foundation and while my mind sought to remedy this, my eyes turned to look across the street. The fuselage of a wrecked passenger jet sat wedged between two houses and some shattered trees. Smoke drifted up from the aft part of the wreckage and one solitary scream rose and fell abruptly.

I should go in there, I thought, but I needed my gloves. My truck was there in front of my house and I rifled through the cab looking for gloves and a jacket. I can’t help anyone with burned hands and needing protection from fire was foremost in my brain. Seconds and minutes ticked by as I heard the sirens of emergency vehicles in the distance.

Oddly, like dreams go, events transpired quickly but my body and thought process worked slowly. Should move my truck, I thought, so the fire trucks could get better access? I smelled fuel. Suddenly, the cockpit of the aircraft burst into flames, and the fire torched back through the passenger section.

Moving even slower now and cognizant that there was little hope for the victims, I donned my jacket and gloves and turned towards the inferno. “Who could I have saved had I acted more swiftly?” I asked myself. Though I knew that I might have died in that plane with all those victims had I gone in there, the guilt of my delayed actions hung over me. I was contemplating all this as I awakened from the dream.

The loggerhead shrike (Lanius ludovicianus) is a passerine bird. It is the only member of the shrike family endemic to North America; the related northern shrike (L. borealis) occurs north of its range but also in the eastern Palearctic.
It is nicknamed the butcherbird after its carnivorous tendencies, as it consumes prey such as amphibians, insects, lizards, small mammals and small birds.[2]

Due to its small size and weak talons, this predatory bird relies on impaling its prey upon thorns or barbed wire for facilitated consumption.[3]

The numbers of Loggerhead Shrike have significantly decreased in recent years, especially in Midwest, New England and Mid-Atlantic areas.[4]

Health Report--
My legs look better today. I've tried to lay prone as much as I can stand it.
(Ha ha, I made a funny!)

Sitting at the computer I cannot lift the legs comfortably and it does no good anyway. The torso needs to be horizontal, or nearly so, for the swelling to lessen. I cannot sit up in bed to read because of this.

I've taken to turning on the computer to a movie and listening to it but not watching, using my imagination to create visuals...sort of like listening to the radio when I was young.

I have been suffering quite a bit of cramping in the hands and feet, along with the swelling. It is very painful and the only way to alleviate the cramps is to wait them out, unfortunately. Magnesium is not the answer--four tabs a day and they still occur. Just typing here for this little while my left hand and wrist are cramping, so I'd better knock it off.

It was right about freezing this morning here for the fourth or fifth day in a row, and the old sycamores in Courthouse Park are nearly done shedding leaves. These two photos were taken through the window glass in my room so as not to let any heat out. The sun, I'm sure, came up in nearly the same place as it did yesterday, so I didn't go outside to photograph it this morning.

Selfie.

Spironolactone?

I threw out all my brothers meds a while back and his main problem was his liver, but he was prescribed a bunch of stuff besides lasix

I'd rely on the docs at this point, but ask them about other drugs
