hippies' mantra

being, not doing
process, not products
sharing, not having
journey, not end points

so I'm here dropping ideas and you're looking in...what a trip!

like, man

not wanting to be liked or loved
but loaded with hair
chock full of espresso
choking on disdain
and hiding it with cool

custom-made bongos

"Oh, I'm NOT the door, by the way.
Jesus says he's both the door and the way, you know?
He also says he's no whipping boy."

"The changing light in San Francisco is none of your East-Coast light, none of your pearly light of Paris.
The light of San Francisco is a sea light, an island light, and the light of fog blanketing the hills,
drifting in at night through the golden gate to lie on the city at dawn, and then the halcyon late mornings
after the fog burns off and the sun paints White Houses with the sea light of Greece, with sharp, clean shadows
making the town look like it had just been painted, but the wind comes up at four o’clock, sweeping the hills,
and then the veil of light of early morning, and then another scrim, when the new night fog floats in
and in that vale of light the city drifts, anchorless, upon the ocean."
--Lawrence Ferlinghetti, painting light on the walls of life.

On Oz

I crawled up the cathedral steps and pounded on the door but when the Madonna let me in I lit candles and imagining an atheistic prayer I said Flora would have liked it so down on the street I saw the carpenter surprisingly a man in five million people I knew who lived right around the corner just upstairs from Linda Ronstadt so he took us over to Haight to that smoky African restaurant where we remembered to eat with our fingers like man the head shop had nag champa insense so we stocked up and no we didn't smoke out like the old days but still got those munchies as we strolled the park to an arboretum it was closed but the banana trees and bamboo is still visible in my memory of that cathedral and the Madonna's glance at midnight behind the grocery counter where I hid my tears with sunglasses and wouldn't go to the war memorial until sunrise and the dark glasses helped but my grief was all too visible while my wife asked for a birthday gift to see the symphony and afterwards we had the best gelato and that amusement park phantom up the coast steps made me paranoid but the menu there read the entrees were over priced yet I always loved that city where once dreaming of climbing the Trans America Building we winded up buying a blanket at Pendleton where after we rode the trolley down to Fisherman's with exquisite views up Lombard winding up there we had to ride the Coit Tower elevator but there sat the Madonna again in the gift shop giving sidelong glances while my wife looked on but where I've always gone and parrots fly returning from under those Golden Gate jumpers watching me and knowing that I've gone to find my heart still beats.

Time to dream perchance to sleep
Time to rest and count some sheep

Mary's little lamb is lost in Shanghai
It may soon be served as stir-fry

See you when it happens.

Rust never sleeps
Sleep never rests
Both simply abide
But not this morn
For sleep does not
Abide in my abode
While the sleeve of care
Ravels further
As I lie in the dark
Rusting

Hi There Mouse and all,
Busy days, but smoke is truly gone, and now all the winter firewood is stacked, the MG has gone to storage for the winter, and I am freezing veggies. I spent today and tonight helping move and unpack stuff for a friend.

Wow, I go away for a while and come back to hauntingly beautiful, slightly surreal photography, a piece from Bushman that defies my comprehension so far. I know there is a story there, still escaping my grokking.

Did I say I saw the Eclipse from up in the Winds? Very good adventure. I did a short article about it. But coming home through Jackson the next day was a traffic jam! Escaped over Teton Pass into peaceful Idaho. Had to put my smoke mask on in Lima. By Butte, I was in serious smoke. Then of course it hung around for some time.

The fresh air is so sweet after the smoke. The smoke was a lot worse over in the Bitterroot and up in the Swan. And I know Cali, Washington, Idaho had very bad smoke as well. I hope all the fires are out by now. It was a rough summer for wildfires.

Neebee, if you read this, did you get my note?

The Metaphor and the Madonna

Metaphor for the spiritual mother
She rejected me sexually
But held me close to her bosom
And I let her as the warm smells of patchouli
Wafted up into my nostrils
And I stifled all my carnal thoughts and feelings
And let her comfort me and knew it wasn't wrong

Metaphor for my first lover
She was the thick allure of money
As I worked at her she thrust me dollars
And I was told by the Jesus puppet
Not to take her in and save some tithings
She was false and told me so
So I put her outside like the cat
And went my own way

Metaphor for the way the cool girls chewed gum
And went to drive-in movies in their new cars
And I was told it was a sin
And I was drawn into the circus
And the carnival was all the actors
I was an outside clown from the country
That's who they wanted me to play
Though I sure as hell was from the town

Metaphor was the Madonna for all I hated
With the mighty program with all the gossiping
And gospel-ling where the Jesus puppet led
All the ladies and old men wore all their fakery the same
Until the family who lost their boy in Vietnam had such grief and it was real

Metaphor was how I turned away from Christianity
And read the Bhagavad Gita while experimenting with independence
Smoking drugs and playing music
While climbing mountains to watch the sun rise
And taking charge of all my decisions
And opening and closing my mind

Metaphor was hitting bottom and being wrong
Finding emptiness in a bottle
Knowing nothing and praying to a stone
For simple guidance until I understood
That I knew nothing and though I was nowhere
I had everything I'd ever needed between my ears

Metaphor is just I don't know

Blip Blap Bleep

Now sit yourselves down strangers
Say your prayers and go to sleep
And I will sing you all a fable
About the monk named Blip Blap Bleep
Don't look too deep for meaning
Or a moral you can keep
It's just a story about the journey
Of the monk named Blip Blap Bleep

Blip Blap Bleep
Oh Blip Blap Bleep
Don't say you've never heard of him
That monk named Blip Blap Bleep

He was born in a little village
At the foot of a glacial seep
In an undisclosed location
Ask his father Sergeant Bleep
He was raised on the finest goat cheese
Though it spoiled and wouldn't keep
He would climb the highest mountains
Walking backwards in his sleep

Blip Blap Bleep
Oh Blip Blap Bleep
You will attain your higher self
When you find that Blip Blap Bleep

He was told to join the army
If he ever would earn his keep
But decided to go AWOL
Disappeared without a peep
He snuck around the enemy
And disarmed them in their sleep
He was hailed a national hero
They sung praise to Blip Blap Bleep

Blip Blap Bleep
Oh Blip Blap Bleep
All the people they would follow him
That monk named Blip Blap Bleep

But he hated notoriety
And he wanted to live cheap
He hightailed it to the jungle
To an ashram in the deep
Where he studied Jedi yoga
And the Shaolin tiger creep
He was the master of all the gurus
And nevermore spoke a peep

Blip Blap Bleep
Oh Blip Blap Bleep
You will finally see enlightenment
When you're one with Blip Blap Bleep
Blip Blap Bleep
Oh Blip Blap Bleep
You'll be set for the final journey
With the teachings of Blip Blap Bleep

If I'd have known that Zeparella was gonna be there, I'd wouild have tried to cancel my reservation at the Samurai Hotel and scurried on over.

Except for those falling rocks, it probably would have been a lot safer. IMO.

For those who don't know, NORTHSIDE DRIVE is now open and traffic is returned to "normal,"
which is to say "pathetic" because I witnessed a ten-minute wait TO GET OUT of the parking lot
behind the Village Store this weekend.

There was a layer of gray rock dust on the road, now cleaned off,
and the leaves of trees are coated with it so they look silvery.

FWIW, Dingus, I can't see your pic because my computer's infected with a stinkin' virus
and it's slow and doin' weird things lately.

There, got it. I need to click on stuff twice or more to make things happen,
or to go back to a previous screen and try again, apparently.

That's an interesting display. Track workers transport.

The Little Train is trapped and caged behind a chain link fence. The tracks of the old Eldorado Latrobe Line run through an open area now being developed for hundreds of new homes. Due to construction the tracks are blocked on both sides of the Little Train. It is literally trapped in this spot and locked in a cage, surrounded by loud bossy D10s and heartless foremen in pickup trucks.

It seems no one cares for the Little Train and its lost and forgotten. The main train back in the yard in Folsom wonders from time to time, but trains can't hold a thought for all that long if you see what I am saying.

Here is where they covered over the tracks

There is hope for the train and for the railroad. Some old dogs have been restoring the line for years with the intention of running the old steam engines in Folsom up to Eldorado once more. It would be pretty dang cool if they built a train station near these new houses to be....
