Is it still bad for the rock if they don't place gear?

Pretty much everyone knows that sandstone face holds are very friable and likely to break when wet. Hans and Alex with their high climbing IQs and their propensity to climb fast and with little gear would not go on a climb when they felt that conditions might make the holds tenuous.

But we are talking about Hands Chlorine and Ajax Handhold.. Surely they know respect for the rock.?

Exactly, Ron. If those guys can't exercise common sense, no one can!

It would depend on the sandstone. Many have a fair amount of limestone mixed in and become slippery. If you are talking about Redrocks near Vegas I have some insight. I talked to a rescue guy out there because I had been reading about accidents there that involved rock breakage. He told me his observations that the rock is very hard when dry, but when soaked it becomes weak. Most of their rescues that involved rock breaking occurred after long periods of rain, not after the occasional storm.

FYI, Hans just told me that the photo in question was taken over a year ago.
