This is what Adobe says

Similar to what I did... except that I only cared for black and white so I used black and white in the background for comparison and skipped all other colors.

'd be interesting people state via what devices they're viewing the picture : )

For instance:

PC, NB, tablet, smart phone, slider....

I'm viewing the picture on my desk-top, though it looks pretty much the same on an 4s

I've got what you call red and green color impairment. When I take the color vision test I miss 11 out of 14 slides. Very few women have it. Guys gets the trait from their mother. Your mother's father is the carrier, and is likely to have been color impaired as well.

I see white and gold.

As someone who spent much of his working life dealing with the way in which the perception of color changes depending on many factors, all I can say is that debating what color the dress is, based on an image on an website, viewed on a million different computers and cell phones, is a complete waste of time.

Bring us all to a place where we can see the actual dress, in the same light, and we can start having a meaningful conversation. And then we can vary the lighting, and start arguing all over again.

ok holy sh#t.. it's hard blue and black now.

I cant get white gold at all anymore but earlier it was clearly gold and almost white.. very interesting.

several minutes later

And now I'm seeing blue and dark gold.

Seems to be my mind's attempt to white balance or something like that changing the color I perceive...so cool.

Pretty much my thoughts when first seeing the picture. It's useless to argue what colors there are on the dress (which I am not sure if that's the intention of OP. I think the point of this post is how different people can see colors differently from each other, due to various factors.) We will never tell the original colors of the dress unless seeing it in person (coz of the lighting... camera exposure... and so on...) , not to mention this is crappy picture of such bad exposure. Even then... each individual could see colors differently from others whether slightly or largely when in person.

For now, this picture in particular, well... what colors we see would be mainly based on the calibration of each monitor and device. Though I see hardly any difference between my desk-top and an 4s (even adjusted the brightness and it made no difference.)

What I found intriguing is two-shoes' post. For me, that explained it and matched what I had in mind initially - that each individual sometimes sees colors differently. I don't have red and green color impairment, but I've found myself seeing some "yellow/green" differently from others, while to me the color appears sort of neonish-yellow, it's green to others.. and vice versa.

Meanwhile, the two picture files I posted (one by me and one from Adobe) provide pretty fair comparison. It doesn't matter what devices used/viewed on, black is black and white is white... all is needed is to match with these two.

I'm viewing it on my 4s and i'm still seeing white and gold but the white is more of a light blue really.

Initially i did see it as black and blue.

Nope has very little to do with the monitor.

The picture changed about thirty minutes later for me on the same monitor.

It is not a subtle change at all. It's pretty freaky if you have it happen to you. I will be checking it from time to time to see what mode my brain is in. Pretty wild.

It looks to me like the dress is white and gold, but the photo's color balance is off so the white comes across as blue (so I guess I'm seeing blue and gold). Apparently people in the same room looking at the same monitor are seeing different stuff, so I don't think it's the calibration of the monitor.

On a related note, is this dancer turning to their right or to their left?

True ghost and powder, but five of us looked at the same device/monitor and saw it differently and my girlfriend sees it one way then the other.
Our eyes trick us everyday. Is an apple really red? It's reflecting a red light back at us and absorbing the rest of the colors. So is it really every color but red? The only way I can see the dress as blue and black is if I squint. This is a trick taught in painting and drawing to see gradients better.

Barry, you're making us white and golds look bad saying you can't see colors!

Moose, sorry to disappoint you.

^^^^^

That dancer file is a gif. It's animated so it moves whichever direction as the designer creates it. So in this case, it changes direction every once in a while...cuz it was designed this way. : p

This is simply an example of Largo's no-thing, having no physical extent nor color. If you see white and gold (I don't) you have moved to a higher (or lower) astral plane. The Caltech kids could explain this.

Americans tax their brains over anything.

The rest of the world happily grows nice food stuff in their gardens and live happily ever after all while poor Americans tax their brains.

And ..... jgill has found the art of trolling .....
