OH, no names released yet...
folks will have to wait, unless YOU know your friends were up there,
at these times...

An Oregon National Guard helicopter has airlifted two climbers off Mount Hood after the two were injured in a fall, rescue officials said.

The two climbers, a male and a female, are being taken to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center for treatment, American Medical Response in Portland said.

The climbers were injured after they fell early Saturday near an area on the mountain known as the Hogsback, according to the Clackamas County sheriff's office. A call for help was received just before 11 a.m., Deputy Ben Frazier said.

The male climber might have a broken femur, while the female climber has two broken ankles, Frazier said.

A third climber, another male who was also with them, was able to make it down the mountain with help.

The climbers were on the popular south-side climbing route. Frazier said he did not know what caused them to fall. Weather conditions near the mountain were good Saturday: clear skies and sun. Hogsback is a snow ridge at about 10,000 feet elevation.

Members of Portland Mountain Rescue, a volunteer search and rescue group, and American Medical Response reached the injured climbers earlier in the day and helped stabilize them.

Rescuers and paramedics relocated the injured climbers to a nearby area that's easier to reach by helicopter, which plucked both climbers off the mountain with the rotors still turning, American Medical Response said.

The sheriff's office says the names of the climbers will not be released at this time.

morning,
My hart is so heavy with forbodeing. . .
as the hoard ventures forth into the cold world.
be smart out there, the season of short hours and long nights can be unforgiving.

In my own way, I send universal prayers and hopes for peace and healing.

hey there say, gnome ofthe diabase...
say,
good that us folks, here, can chip in prayers, at least...

two broken ankles will be hard, get well... :(

my step-grandkid's dad had broke both his feet, in a long
fall from a roof--it was a long hard, get well...
this, from the climb, sure is much worse...

dear climbers:
we hope you both get well soon as you can...
hope many are there for the needed support,
and that the damage can be fixed well...

glad the third climber, was safe, and may you
feel well, soon, after seeing your friends, fall...

no part of accidents are easy, even for those that
are uninjured... whewwww...

I always take it as a good sign when the rescue helicopter's rotors are still turning.

My neighbor was a PJ on one of those crews. One time, he was ordered by his CO to some kind of training that he'd been putting off, which coincided with his helo that he'd normally be crewing on, being called out for a rescue then crashing and rolling down the Mt during in this very area. He missed all the excitement. Indescribably and amazingly, no loss of life although I think at one point as the helo was rolling down the hillside it rolled over one of the crew members that had just been tossed out.

So yeah, always good to have the rotors turning, it's not always a given:-)

MOUNT HOOD, Ore. – Rescuers reached two injured climbers who fell on Mount Hood Saturday morning.

An Oregon National Guard helicopter airlifted the climbers, later identified as Brian and Michelle Carlson, of Northeast Portland, to Legacy Emanuel Hospital.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office said the husband and wife were injured near Hogsback, a popular route on the south side of the mountain, just before 11 a.m.

Michelle Carlson, 43, broke both her ankles in the fall and Brian, 39, suffered a broken leg, according to Deputy Ben Frazier.

The Carlsons were recovering on Sunday. The couple's family told KGW they were too shaken up to talk about their fall, but wanted to thank the rescuers who helped get them off the mountain.

A third climber who also fell was not seriously hurt. Karthik Jambunathan, 29, of Hillsboro, suffered minor injuries and was not hospitalized, Frazier said.

Jambunathan was able to make it down the mountain with help.

Portland Mountain rescue was training on the Mountain, so they had help within a couple hours of the Accident.

Here's a TR from the same day, with some nice pictures. He saw the fall, sounds like PMR was there within minutes. They're a pretty great outfit. http://cascadeclimbers.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/1134052/TR_Mt_Hood_Pearly_Gates_right_#Post1134052
