Yah, That's It.
Been Testin' Yer Mettle On The Lumpy Bumps?
Let's See It!

Here's my long term proj:
It's ambitious I know,
Well, Ludicrous really.
(don't try this at home).

But I'm gonnah, by hook, crook, or hidden wires,
Match up my played out carcass to some pictured positions which Gill Proved and Portrayed.
And this'l be tuff, cuz 'most my strings already done been plucked!
So here goes...

Note how far up Gill is off his right arm compared to the Poseur Postur Tarbousier;
oh well, that's how it's going to be going, at best...

So, once again Taco Bro's & Sistas, let's see yer dangdest

No bould'rin thread would be complete without a pic of Bob Kamps at Stoney. Too bad this is the only one I have!

One of the things I miss the most about moving away from LA is Stoney & the crew of fun (and hard!) climbers. You can visit
The Stoney Point Bouldering Website
for more fine pictures of hard boys & girls by Brooks Ayola.

Here is one in particular that I like from that site, just 'cause it captures one of the essential parts of bouldering, which is silly competition with friends. I mean, look, Craig isn't even 2 inches off the ground, and everyone's totally focused on him!

It generally starts out like this:
Me: Hey, check this out! Can you do this?
You: I can totally do that, and look, I've added another heinous move.
Her: Oh yeah? Well I can do that, add a move, and not even use that "giant" hold which is obviously "off".
Him: What are you guys doing? Oh man, I did that problem in the Jurassic Era. Footholds weren't even invented yet and I was in EB's bein' chased by dinosaurs....

Hey, Roy--

What amazed me about the Acrobatic Overhang was how poor the landing was. You had to basically flash the problem or bones would be showing if you pitched off past the big reach up and left--and it ain't over then, neither. I was there (circa 1975) with a bunch of local Boulder guys and none of them would go for it. Impressive for 1960--or now, for that matter.

The only bone I have showing for Acrobat Overhang is the one in my pants!

I get to that intermediate crimp I have latched in my photo, then I quietly descend, tip toe back down through the large lopsy topsy boulders inconveniently lacing the landing...

A running tally of 3 out of 4 of my generations progeny have summited; Hannah is only 4 but sez she's gonna be a climber when she grows up.

My sister in law who has never ever climbed an inch wanted to climb it with us last summer. She's tough (had to take a year off college to sew baby clothes in exile, after getting arrested in the Tianamen square debacle among other things)and if ever someone could do it with no experience, it might be her. I felt bad advising against it.

On the rappels Natalie and I talked about it;
"This was so much fun, are we bad to have discouraged Meng?"me spoke.
"She had no idea what this is like, dad. If somebody made me climb it when I had no experience, with the exposure, learning to trust the ropes, rapeeling for the first time and everything... I would have resented the whole thing and never wanted to climb again."

How did my kid get so smart?

But I suspect Meng will get up there one of these trips. Although she won't go to the local gym to learn. "That's not the real stuff!"

Small but important point - those shoes are not Kendos. They are the other stiffer Sportivas from the time that had a small black collar around the ankle area. I can't remember their name, but they in no way were the equals of the mighty Kendo, one of the best faces climbing shoes ever.

JL, man those ropes were keeping us from being blown into the rez. You know how Colorado winds blow.

bvb, you’re on to something why just today I found myself taping up me knuckles for a scroungy boulder ascent,
that cross dressing Tarbustier is a bad influence.
Although on a positive note we have furthered the speed of our ascents by creating the “girlyman cotton candy wig dip”.

This saves the climber the task of reaching behind to fluff ones digits in chalk.
Now you can move faster on slimy holds by dipping into the “forward wigdip” this provides a sticky, biodegradable bond for those “girly” problems.

One of our "touchy feely" field tests.

Or at least don't post directions on the intardnet. Pictures are cool tho, plus enthusiastic "That place f'n rocks!!!" are always good to hear.

But go climbing up there for sure, it needs more locals, most of us have moved somewhere with an economy and local redneck rampaging has resulted in some vandalism.

Plus some as#@&%e's been trying to trap cougars and bobcats in one of the caves, using dead beavers and fish as bait. F*#kers gonna end up in a shallow hole if he's not careful.

Bolts are still taboo, and as we buy up more of the remaining private land holding cliffs, will hopefully remain that way.

Tarbuster, regarding the third photo of this thread, with you
on Gill's "Acrobat Overhang," I hesitate to mention you have
just arrived at the hard move. It's pretty moderate to get to
where you are. It's the next section, and to do it statically
(which is the test on this one). When I made the second ascent
of this route it was a proud moment in my bouldering experiences.
It's much harder, actually, than the photos make it look...
