I've wondered about this too, but I haven't looked into it as I figure it is just another scam.

The previous article link was very interesting.

So is this one: http://www.wired.com/2010/03/lifelock-accused-of-running-con-operation/

The CEO of Lifelock, Todd Davis, became famous for advertising his Social Security number on television ads and billboards promising his $10 monthly service would protect consumers from identity theft.

The company also offered a $1 million guarantee to compensate customers for losses incurred if they became a victim of identity theft after signing up for the service.

But the Federal Trade Commission said Tuesday that the claims were bogus (.pdf) and accused Lifelock, based in Arizona, of operating a scam and con operation. The commission announced, along with 35 state attorneys general, that it had levied a fine of $12 million against the company for deceptive business practices and for failing to secure sensitive customer data. Of that amount, $11 million will go to refund customers who subscribed to the service. Consumers will receive a letter from the FTC and their attorney general explaining how to take part in the settlement.

The FTC said that Lifelock, which advertises itself as “#1 In Identity Theft Protection,” engaged in false advertising by promising customers that if they signed up with its service their personal information would become useless to thieves.

We signed after my wife's purse was stolen. Everything: driver's license, credit cards, debit card, check book, gone. We signed up that same afternoon and were able to stop several efforts to use the credit card later that same day. The thieves later printed bogus checks and wrote a number of them to Target, Best Buy, etc. We soon received letters from those vendors demanding payment. I'm an attorney and spoke with them, telling them it was identity theft, etc.,and they'd just hang up and call back later. Life Lock took care of everything. I don't think our credit scores changed either. All in all, it worked for us.

Thanks FAT Dad. I'm not rich but have a fair amount of assets in my savings and 401ks. Seems like relatively cheap insurance if they provide a service of value. The last thing I need right now is to spend a year recovering my assets and cleaning up my credit.

Did you not read Fitz's post?

I have had my wallet stolen, and a call to the bank and credit card company is all I had to do. The thieves had already spent $10,000 but the bank and credit card company refunded the money.

okay i'll be the dirtbag spokesman
because today's climber is woefully diluted
by her / his environment...
and o.w. and then needs some
friendly persuasion...

but, come on.

life should not ever be locked.

finances? those are what we load into our pipe.

protection?

fore go it. get the dream pregnant.

if really you are concerning yourself
with such utter bullshite as
suggested by your thread title,
then you should do time in
a situational tangle where
your spoon shows up empty
and your head knows no dry pillow.

your insurance is a spider running across the floor.
your dream is so swollen
that fear cannot find a secure stance
and you just

gawdamn thrive.

then and only then
will you steadfastly realize
that the bullshite
hanging on the banker's tongue
is straight from the politition's assheol.

Wedge-

I've dumped a fair amount of cash on the taco people. I would not have been able to do it if I was broke. Do you have a parachute?

edit: I spent some time in the ditch in the early 80's dumpster diving for cans. You don't know me.
