The list is long for me, and mostly in my past since I am mostly vegan now. But I have fond memories of these two spots.

Olamendi's now in Capo Beach, but originally in San Clemente. At 17 -19 years we would go in there after an evening surf and it was the best. Good food and they would serve us beer (with food, and you had to behave yourself). People would sign their names and put stickers on the wall. A very laid back place. The family and workers there were very musical and sing and play mariachi for everyone. I remember one time I was blown away by the singing of their new dishwasher. Great times and food. They moved to Capo beach to the North along the Coast Hwy. Still good food after the move, but a lot more strict. No more singing dishwashers and you have to be 21 to drink. BUt, the son took over and I think he had a long time crush on my sister. If he was there, the food was extra good and we'd be drinking Hornitos to well after closing time with him.

El Patio Cafe in Capo Beach. Since his mom, Lucy, retired, Jack has run the place. Jack was brought up working the place from dishwashing to cooking and beyond. We surfed and skated together and went El Patio for food back in the day. Good food and great atmosphere, we always had a good time there. But Olamendi's in SC was the best bitd.

i'LL post a San DIego one next time.

Who was the first of us to coin the term "Supertaco" for supertopo? It sure stuck!

I know it was you Crimpie! Don't ask me how. I just know.

*-*-*

Another spot I liked was in Pasadena. Their speciality was to bring you a "lazy Susan" tray (what kind of name is that?) with all the ingredients and you built your own tacos (just like they do down in Baja).

I wish I could remember the name.

@skcreidc

I used to go to Olamendi's a lot. When did they move? It seems like it wasn't that long ago that I ate there. I remember because the margaritas had gotten so expensive.

I used to drive down from South Laguna to Lucy's too. Good to hear it's still there. I was thinking of stopping on one of my trips up&down the freeway. SJC was also where I first heard the phrase "blind munchies" (1962 or 1963), but I don't think it was due to Lucy.

It's pretty cool - Lucy's even has a video on Utube.

At my new favorite Mex-food joint, the food takes second to the mango jalapeno margaritas. OMG! What a combo. There is at least a whole chile sliced and muddled in there. Some hot chili powder and salt on the rim and no umbrellas or cheeseburgers dangling from toothpicks cluttering up the goodness of it all.

Chaz- Thanks for the beta. One downside of always avoiding cities as much as possible is missing out on some killer eats you just can't find north of the border!

Thanks for that blast from the past z!

More taco pics! ;)

I don't have a favorite, but this past migration, I got a craving for refried beans, and stopped at a place called Casa Grande in Somerset, Kentucky. The parking lot was full, in a neighborhood with plenty of open lots...so I took that as a good sign, or a sign of cheap food...hahah

The workers inside were all grown Mexican men, which was also interesting. I don't know if it is an extended clan, or what, but they were friendly and helpful. The food was GOOD. I ordered this thing which was like fajitas, but it had just about every sort of meat imaginable - shrimp chicken, beel, even beef liver, which was delectable. And, it was HUGE. Three big meals were had from that.

Mexical Blue in New Platz has great salmon burritos and I love the beef quesidilla. Fresh cilantro, flavorful spices, and delicious crema. But after all these years, you'd think they'd realize that they need a bigger place..... Keep the teensy downtown location for the walk-ins but open a damn proper space already. Next time the place next to Snugs come available - they should grab it.

Simple, fast, delicious (and I'm pretty sure that is real lard in the tin can back on the grill. OMG good!).

Tangent - As much as I'd like credit for the clever supertaco moniker, it's not mine. A quick search shows the first time it shows up on this website is in this thread: http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.php?topic_id=62&msg=63#msg63 on Sept 28 of 2001. Mick Ryan first used it.

Red Iguana in SLC, simply the best Mexi/Central American in he west, IMO. For traditional central Mexican, The Mazatlan in BC. For straight up tacos, Super Taco in Bako. I grew up surfing and fishing in baja and SoCal and the two I mentioned above that are in the US are the tops for the west according to my taste buds and their knowledge via growing up in in EastBako in the barrio Lomita. I mentioned The Mazatlan because Nelson is the best town to find yourself in NA!! hehe

"Supertaco" - I'll take credit for tagging it that before 2001. Might have been around 1998 or so, but I know it was when McNamara came out with the individual route topos. They were folded up, laminated-like, and had WAY too much information. We thought the folded up idea was good but slandered the hell out of all the beta- "#4 camalot here" blah blah blah, and anyone that would buy it.Ben-wah,Bernie, myself and others had high disdain for them, and I believe it was before there was the books. Bernie, who was working in the Mountain Shop at the time, said they flew off the shelf, which of course only increased our crusty, inflexible, indignation. At that time we called it Supertaco regularly.

I did not hear of a website/forum until around 2000 via Blair (Zip) and when I looked at that, oh boy, but that's a different story......

I have been told that the place is a front for all the DRUG LORDS that work the area. Thats why they have adjustable hours. True????? :>)

Haha. That's a joke I hope, cause that family works hard for whatever they have and they don't have fancy cars and gold plated pistols.

They do have some shitty hours though. Closed on Sun and Mon. Closed during ciesta hours and close around 730 each night.

Just in ... Yes just a joke, we have places around here where I live, that also have weird hours... The cafe down the street for example, They open for Breakfast at 8.00 and close at 5pm.... the local rumor is that its just a front for money laundering .....

GuyMan, c'mon tell the truth!? You know, that time you ended up in the E.R. after you went to your "favorite" Taco Stand. . .1979?

Edit; thats the reason why your Friends won't eat at the same places that you do. . .

Ha, I remember, almost died according to the docs, 7 days down - my roommates rushed me to the hospital when I stopped moving.
Thats the price one must pay for fine eats.

BIG Mike.... You must come down to STONEY POINT... then we go to Los Torros.

And Chaz, your correct about the 10 and the 60 fwys... If east bound on the 10, you get off of the 10 at Alabama St, out in Redlands, go south for about 1/8 mile there is a place, on the right, cant recall the name, Zebulas or something.... always busy,- Shrimp Cocktail .. to go please.

What's with the whitebread, CC?Maria's has good days and bad days, it seems. But it's a far cry from the old TB it once was.

I ate here tonight.

I had tacos pastor and a taco salad, the ultimate whitebread menu item!

There is another Maria's in an old drive-in on 16th near G Grade, but it has different owners. The one on R has two others in their family in Atwater and another spot. And then there is Marie's Enchiladas, too, on Main.

But the best, most consistent and LEAST BUSY is La Cotija on Main at H. It used to be the Fosters' Freeze, an integral part of the cruisin' scene.

Jeff and I went to the Tijuana Cafe a half-block away for the best atmosphere and smallest possible indoor space when we cruised and wanted Mexican. It and the flies have been gone since the early seventies.
