Testing out my new found skills with Picasa: Those vertical pictures look ok here! But I need to figure out how to do some other editing, like darkening the center part of the pic.

Boo- You need some editing software for that. Gimp is a free one. If you reduced the exposure and increased the contrast a bit you would get the effect you are looking for. If you had photoshop or lightroom you could also decrease the highlights and increase the shadows. Then play with exposure and contrast a bit.
