Happy, Got here late last week. Great skiing despite the lack of new snow. BB is awesome, chasing my grandkids down it’s gullies and thru the trees is such great fun. Heading home today. I’ll be back early Feb, I’ll buy you a beer at the Griz to toast being skiers!

Slow very cold start here in Wyoming. But if you get above the inversion there is some sun and even some decent snow to be had.
Charlie and Donny we should ski together sometime.

Norm, just saw your post. Getting together would be fun. My skiing been limited the past few winters to xc shuffling about Hyalite as my replacement knee is failing badly. Now scheduled for “complex TKA revision surgery” mid-feb. where the glued in device now there gets removed then replaced with a geriatric version with a limited life...still struggling with the plan.

Happy- We actually have met briefly before. J Mullins is good friend of mine. I believe you were his neighbor when we met. He lived with Deanne when you guys were neighbors. The Kind Band days. Anyway, sorry for the thread drift.

Howdy, Nobody here...
Anybody here on NTN? If so, any words of wisdom when it comes to binding choices and why one over the other?
I have Freerides and am considering Outlaws. I don't have a lot of days on the Freerides but they feel mechanical to me and have heard that the Outlaws force the boot to flex more at the ball of the foot....
I have TX-Comp boots(no tech holes) and plan on only using this set-up on area as my skis are Nordica Enforcers, so my set-up is heavy, just like I like it for area/sidecountry slacker skiing.
I'll get my 'tech' on next year after this year's tech goes on sale!

I'm a long time NTN skier, I have both Freerides and Freedoms, but if you are looking at switching from Freerides, and you do at least some touring, I would really really encourage you to look at the Meidjo, hands down, by FAR, the best skiing, best feeling, and safest Tele binding I have ever used, and I go back to the very early 80's on Tele.
I use the Meidjo binding on a pair of Dynastar Mythic 97 skis. Last spring I joined friends in Co. on what was supposed to be a mostly touring trip and ended up skiing Mary Jane/Winter Park 3 days Steamboat 2 days and 4 days of touring around Berthoud pass and RMNP, the Meidjo 2.1, the latest version handle it all beautifully. I have pounded them on ski area bump runs without problem.
I have 3 days in so far this season, my season was delayed by a late Nov. bouldering trip to Bishop. I have 1 day each on the Freerides, Freedoms, and Meidjos, the Meidjos just pain blows the Rotte bindings away.

Man, thanks for the info, I appreciate it but damnit, I already have the Freedumbs and I have TX comps, so no tech tips this year. I have 2 very different feet and rely on some fairly modded boots to accommodate my funky feet. I will be looking closer at the meidjos in the future..
I do tour and have some AT light stuff for longer stroll days and I will just slog my NTN stuff(Nordica Enforcer 100) for the tours off area. Some our best tours go off area into the R-snake wilderness and the Flathead.
RE: release, would you say the Meidjo is better than the Rotte's?

The release is indeed why I say that the Meidjo is safer than almost all other Tele bindings, including the other NTN variants.The Meidjo has a true adjustable release at the second heel, and because of the Tech Toes up front can release there as well. I broke my ankle skiing NTN Freerides 5 years ago doing jump turns down a steep run with a real funky snow conditions. I didn't fall and break it, I buried the tip in some heavy mank while I was still rotating in my jump and snap went the ankle, no hint of release.
I have released 3 times now in 3 seasons skiing the Meido, all no fuss, just click and the ski was off.
I much prefer release bindings in the backcountry, number 1 reason is in case of avalanche, and number 2 is catching a hidden object in deep snow in unknown terrain.

Yup, that was the main reason I switched to AT. Figured my luck was going to run out at some point. I had a difficult time removing my tele boots from my bindings at the end of the day, and they were NOT going to come off in an avalanche.
The Meidjos look pretty cool!

edit - my boots could certainly get ripped off in an avalanche!
I'd prefer my bindings to release 1st.

Man, the reason I went NTN was for release. I bought my stuff 2 years ago and got a 'deal' on Freedoms and TX Comps. I wonder if I could just put my custom Intuition liner and foot bed in a TX Pro with the same size shell? I know they are a softer boot but for the release and since I am hearing the Meidjo skis and releases better I might could try it!

There is no difference between the TX Comp and the TX Pro except the stiffness of the plastic, the size, shape, and fit are exaactly the same, so unless you had the Comp shells punched or otherwise modified the liners should work just fine in the TX Pros. I have both and switch liners on a regular basis, although I much prefere the TX Pro, I like softer boots.
As a conterpoint, my wife has successfully released from her NTN bindings a couple of times with no problem, but she also sprained her ACL when they didn’t. I have heard a lot of good reports on the 22 Designs NTN bindings and how well they ski, I’m just scared off because of the lack of release.
I swapped TX Comp shells for TX Pro shells a number of years ago on the earnyourturns.com forum, Lott’s a good info there on tele stuff.

^^^yep best to take what you would need for a night out. A light weight bevy sack + as my buddy calls his “femur jacket” is not a bad idea. Not that you would survive a night out with a broken femur but it gets you thinking about a wrenched knee miles from the trail head. Never know what cards are going to be dealt on any given day.
