Sad.
I read recently it's been a fad to get a selfie taken with
a bear. Wonder if this wasn't some type of thing like that. . .

Too many Disney movies with talking bears. We've lost our natural sense of fear.

Strange that he was only mauled to death.
Usually when a black bear attacks, you are going to be eaten.

Are you sure? My understanding it's brown / grizzly bears that are more likely to eat me.

I read recently from some bear expert that most Black bear attacks end in consumption. Not a good word to read when you think you might be the dinner...

So sad. If they had stayed together and slowly backed away it is unlikely the bear would have attacked. Black bears can run 30 mph. Trying to outrun a bear is a bad idea and can trigger a predatory response.
I read that the last fatal bear attack in New Jersey was in 1852. Obviously this is a rare event.
I wonder if the bear was feeding on a carcass or perhaps a gut pile. There is an interesting study recently started in the Teton area. They are looking at the relationship between grizzlies and hunters. I'll post a link to it later.
Here is a list of bear fatalities with short descriptions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_bear_attacks_in_North_America

Your post has an almost jocular tone, t-man. Why? Wasn't a man mauled to death?

It's the internet, its NJ( you would have to be from the northeast to understand) and the person took photos of the bear just before being consumed. Yes it is not a very classy post by yours truely but a bit of gallows humor seemed like the proper response to the slowest runner in the group getting eaten while takeing a photo with a cell phone....

Brown/black bear attacks: you're going to be eaten, fight for your life
Grizzly attacks: power struggle, play dead

John McPhee, in his book "Table of Contents," wrote a wonderful story about New Jersey bears. Well worth reading.
Anyway, to get eaten by a black bear would require a unique set of circumstances. I chase them out of my yard, driveway etc., regularly. Even a mom and cubs, they run away. Maybe I should be more careful?
Bad picture but Mom and two cubs right after I chased them out of the patio.

The Wiki article was interesting. The maps of bear kills were even more interesting. A large number of the people killed in the U.S. by bears (lower 48) were killed by captive bears, not encounters in the wild.In Canada only one captive bear killed anyone, all the rest occurred out doors. My guess is that they have stricter laws up there about privately owned bears.

..do not speed in your driveway.
Don't worry. But actually I think the deer are more of a hazard than the bears. Last month I was out there with my crazy terrier. There was a large doe in the drive and he went batshit crazy, but instead of running she came at us, got up on her hind legs and charged forwards bringing her front feet down hard about 6 feet from the dog. Then she kept on coming. Lucky I had the little rat bastard (meant with love) on a leash so I could haul him away as I ran for my life. Now when he barks at a mature buck I just get the heck outta there.
