Historically, it was Nuestra Sennorha la Virgen del Buen Ayre, named after the Basilica Bonaria in Sardinia, then the center of the Spanish-Habsburg empire. but you did ok in modern terms.

What are you asking...

Places to live? Climb? Cost of living?

Are you a night person? ( even if you aren't, dinner seating starts at 10:00)
Young or older?

Barrios friendly to English speakers? Where in the city is your job?

Got a budget you can afford? Apartment or house?

No clue. At this point it is just something out there as a possiblity. Just wondering if it would be worth looking into. My SA experience is zero.

Go for it.

Buenos aires is a wonderful cosmopolitan city with a very European flavor. It is very affordable, especially by Southern California standards. Just make sure your salary structure is in US dollars.

You can (just) get by as an English speaker in the tonier neighborhoods of the city with some pidgin Spanish. Places have English menus.

Outside Tourist areas it is different. Outside the city it is generally Spanish only.

I go back for a month or so every couple years just to smile a lot.

Thanks Lorenzo for taking the time. If this moves forward I may send you a PM. The company I work for has a project there. Time to do some googling.

No problem. Good luck.

There are forums for folks like you.

To get a flavor of the craziness that is Argentine politics, this is an easy start.

http://www.buenosairesherald.com

When you google, you will find big ticket items quoted in USD. If you buy a house, you are expected to show up at closing with a suitcase full of cash. Your company should help you with Banking, but most banks are European (BBVA, Santander, Frances, etc).

Keep the "blue" exchange rate in mind, which is well above the official exchange rate. People love dollars. And learn how to identify fake money, lots of counterfitting- some very bad, some pretty good. Shopkeepers will hold a two peso note up to the light. Cabbies are known to pass you bad notes for change.

There are US credit cards that don't charge exchange fees and exempt you from ATM charges anywhere. Find one. I use a visa plus explorer card from chase. Visa is the most accepted card. Try to get the smart version. They are converting faster than we are.

And everybody talks about crime. It is a big city (huge). If you can get by in NY or LA you will do fine.

Street view showed up recently on Google Maps if you want to see neighborhoods.

^^hHa.

Yeah. Some is so amateurish it's funny. I had a guy throw Mate on my back and come up telling me it was a bird pooping on me. Then he's patting me down with a handkerchief trying my pockets helping me "clean up" I started laughing and told him to bug off.

Some people have a fake wallet in the obvious spot. Put a two peso note and a message in it for grins.

I use a Timbuktu bike bag carried in front with the flap well secured and turned toward the body when I'm in crowds. Day packs are carried in front routinely.

Just don't look like a stoopid tourist.

10:00 PM dinner time…. yikes!

http://www.thetravelchica.com/2011/05/how-to-live-like-a-porteno/

seems like another world..

http://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/7720/eat-late-gain-weight-time-to-shatter-the-myth

makes it sound like if you go all in you can do well, but don't try to Americanize it.

Yeah. At many local places 10:00 is the first seating. Tourist places are earlier.

You can sneak in a tea at 4:00ish also. My favorite part of the day. You can sit at a sidewalk cafe and people watch for hours on just an espresso. Waiters don't care.

Working people don't do the whole circuit every day. You'd die.

But social activities are definitely a late night deal. Sleep late.

(Four star hotels ($70-$100 ) do serve good breakfasts.)

And showing up late doesn't always work. I went to the opera and it started 40 minutes early with no notice. The explanation was it was long.

And sometimes the event never happens at all. Alway have plan B.

It's allpart of the adventure.

The bird poop one is getting long in the tooth* but I guess there are plenty of Yanks who still
fall for it. The bumped hot dog with mustard is better IMHO.

And, John, don't forget that they've really slashed prices on boob jobs and manginas.
With cash Americano you can do a twofor (on the manginas).

*(and using mate is really un-professional)
