Of course no one thing brought down the Soviet Union, Ronnie was just the last straw man,
so to speak. Unrepentant bureaucracy fueled by xenophobia was the disease. Afghanistan
was certainly a factor somewhat exacerbated by Charlie Wilson. The Soviets would have
wiped out the majority of the Muj and secured the main towns but eventually they would have
left anyway with a bunch of heroin junkies and the same debt, if not more. Europe will suffer
the same fate, only slower, and we will be right behind them. It doesn't matter what system a
bureaucracy 'serves', eventually the self-serving nature overwhelms the society's capacity to
pay for it. Rome suffered similarly.

Good point on the hair warbler, I think that was the strongest part of his shtick!

Btw, I did mean as a politican. Though really, as bad an actor as he was, his whole extended career came from it. He was able to play an 'aw shucks' governor, who ironically closed down the mental facilities that cared for people with the dementia that he would later succumb to while president. Not sure who his director was through all that, though the Bushes owe him/it/they also.

I was very happy to fight commie bastards with Ronnie as my leader.

Dream come true.
