I read that Mike Moore of Mountain Gazette fame passed away. Mountain Gazette publish a lot of quality work and many outdoor writers owe a lot to his input. A great editor is hard to find.

any memory of interacting with the editors and/or publisher?

I'm sure there must be more climber-authors out there...

From time to time, a story published in Mt. Gazette would blaze into the pantheon of the the climbing literature consciousness like a comet displaced from the Oort cloud announcing itself with a glorious glow as it rounds the sun... off the top of my head I think Night Driving: The Invention of the Wheel and Other Blues was first serialized in that publication.

Publishing is a singular act of conviction which generally does not survive the initial publishers demise. It is a vision of how written things could be, and the energy to produce it. While we think of publishers dressed in suits ensconced in some high rise office building in Manhattan rubbing elbows with the political and economic elite, the reality has been more like some cottage home in places like Sheffield, or Jeffersonville toiling in a labor of love of language, expressing the stories of peoples' unique experiences and thoughts, the art of their existence.

Many of our beloved journals have publishers and editors that are still with us even if their publications no longer are, but as time goes on, they too will cease to participate in the narrative of their making. Those of us who love to read, love language and value the well written word should recognize that without people like Mike Moore, our world would be impoverished, lacking a mental landscapes and the intellectual bonds between readers and authors.
