Hagel did a great job of being relatively apolitical about his role as SofD- not too surprising that he has decided to jump ship (poor methaphor) at this point, though.

Thanks, Chuck.

Yup, big respect for Hagel - and it's too bad that Sylvester Stallone had too evaded the draft by moving to Switzerland where he worked at an all girls school, or he would have won the war fo us.

"The first enlisted man to serve as Secretary of Defense...."

That's just amazing, isn't it?

You'd think that enlisted service would be minimum requirement to be in a position where you take actions that directly affect the lives of the servicepersons you lead.

For that matter, you'd think the same requirement should apply to POTUS, Congress, or any other related political position.

Yeah, I understand the distinction, Kos...it just seems logical that any person who makes decisions about the lives of the people they lead should have had prior experience being in precisely the same roles of those persons. 'Logical' being the operative, yet apparently lost, word in this concept.

Great service as a combatant and a peace time soldier. Thank you.

The low point of Hagel's career was allowing himself to be SD under someone like Obama.

He was smart enough to know that because he was a Republican he was being used by the Narcissist in Chief as a political foil. Despite being manipulated in this cynical political way he no doubt thought that he could nevertheless still be in a position do what he could to blunt the negative effect of Obama on the miltary and some of Obama's worse foreign policy decisions vis a vis the miltary.

News is emerging that he was actually fired. Good. This will go a long way to rehabilitating his legacy and his peace of mind.
He has been increasingly outspoken against the rank incompetence and disastrous consequences of Obama's policies. It must have been extremely difficult for someone with Hagel's background to be subject to a creature like Obama.

I dunno, Ward, having the country subjected to a moron SofD like Rumsfeld, who reported to a moron like Bush II (Cheney, to be accurate), seems a helluva lot worse to me.

Ward, please don't use your own political views to besmirch a true American patriot. Unlike Runsfield, Cheny and Bush, Hagel served. Then again, being a former enlisted man trying to administer West Point and Anapolis graduates, not to mention corrupt Defense Contractors, might have been his greatest combat mission.

Departing Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel may have sealed his exit in this interview with Charlie Rose last week. Rose conducted the interview at the Pentagon.

In the interview, Hagel made two key points that serve as accusations that President Barack Obama is mismanaging the United States military and the ISIS threat.

Rose asked Hagel to elaborate on comments that he made in a speech at the Reagan Library last weekend. In that speech, Hagel said that America’s military capability, while still the best in the world, is being threatened.

Hagel re-iterated that to Rose, but also left viewers to wonder about the direction that President Obama is taking the military.

“I am worried about it, I am concerned about it, Chairman Dempsey is, the chiefs are, every leader of this institution,” Hagel said, including Pentagon leadership but leaving both President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden’s names out of his list of officials who are worried about the U.S. military’s declining capability. Hagel said that the Congress and the American people need to know what while the U.S. military remains the strongest, best trained and most motivated in the world, its lead is being threatened because of policies being implemented now.

Hagel went on to note that a good leader prepares their institution for future success, saying that “the main responsibility of any leader is to prepare your institution for the future. If you don’t do that, you’ve failed. I don’t care how good you are, how smart you are, any part of your job. If you don’t prepare your institution, you’ve failed.”

In the past couple of years, Hagel has warned that defense budget cuts implemented under President Obama were hurting readiness and capability. The “how smart you are” line may be a veiled shot at President Obama, who basks in a media image that he is a cerebral, professorial president.

So Hagel differed with President Obama on basic philosophy on military readiness. The president has a huge responsibility that includes BUDGETS, something underlings often ignore. When underlings differ with the boss on the basics the net result is usually termination of the underling, at least that was the way it went in places I worked.

Should Hagel should have gotten a free pass to differ? Hell no. It is difficult to carry out your job effectively when you have a difference of opinion on basic issues. Despite Hagel's obvious honorable service, his firing was necessary to carry out the job at hand, managing the largest and most expensive military in the world.

"Ugly ouster: 'Frustrated' Hagel faces unfair sniping on way out, says McCain"

The lying criminal, John McCain, immediately appears to try and cover his tracks.

So predictive it's not even funny anymore ......
