Silica Aerogels make the lightest, highest R value foam insulation for Van to camper jobs but cost $$. Do they bonds as well poly U foam?

see amazon for some prices:

aerogels are hydrophylic so there is more to using them then just pasting them onto the surface of your van...

you might want to figure out a cost metric

this may be a bit much for your use... but very low density,
http://www.aerogel.com/_resources/common/userfiles/file/Data%20Sheets/Cryogel_Z_DS.pdf

for this product, the thermal conductivity varies from 0.1 to 0.12 between -100ºF and 100ºF

call it 0.11 (BTU-in/f2^2/hr/ºF) , that corresponds to an "R-value" of 9/in of insulation, the thick blanket is 0.4" so you get R value of 3.6

has better properties for flame resistance, etc, then foam.

EDIT: Ahhhh now I see that was about insulating a VAN...DOH!!!!

I got aerogel sleeping pad from pacific outdoor equipment (out of buisness now). the pad was a hybrid foam-aerogel-air pad. It is light and had a very high r-value (R6.7 or something). It was good and warm (used in high altitude peru mountaineering) and I liked that even if the air bladder popped I would still have some foam. However I now have the neo-air xtherm and it is so much more comfortable. I would pick the neoair anyday over the other pad because it is so much more comfortable and not far off in r value. I would get a better sleep without feeling the ground than I would being slightly warmer but with rocks poking me.

a bit pricey, however,

2'x4'x10mm will cost you $300

probably not cost effective for your application.

Andy Carson of Jackson Hole Mtn guides told me he had used some aero gel for his Sprinter Van but it was very expensive. My van was insulated with poly U foam and works quite well.

Ryan Laird acquired a Sprinter Van and was hoping to save headroom by using some kind of super R-value insulation in the ceiling.

Thanks Ed for the data.
