I'm heading to Colombia for a few weeks and will be bringing minimal gear to go climbing. Any tips on where is good location to stop? I'll likely bring a singles rack, draws, and rope to keep my bag light.
Flying into Bogota but intending to travel around the country. Suesca is already on the itinerary so any beta for that location is much appreciated.

I was just telling Jim to watch out for the FARC in the mountains there, lol. But Colombia is much safer than it used to be. A lot of the narco violence seems to have migrated to Mexico. I've been to Pan de Azucar which is OK but not an international destination. Maybe new route opportunities, just because there are few climbers, particularly trad climbers. (suesca is bolted)
Another idea is to get your international paragliding license in Medellin. I just took a ride, but it was cheap and I think the certification course is pretty cheap too. Medellin is a great city, like a giant small town.
* one more thing. January, July whatever. There is more rain in the winter but too close to the equator for a temperature difference. In Colombia, the year round temperature is determined by the altitude.
** you can also watch my two favorite movies before you go, will make the trip more exciting. One is called Vendedora de Rosas, about the life of street children in Medellin. Comes with English subtitles for gringos. The other is called La Sierra, a barrio I've been to. That one is about paramilitary gangs in Medellin. Both are on youtube for free. Then you should to go to that city, and you will have a great life experience.

There's a video out that shows some Colombian bouldering. They brought armed guard(s) with them for protection. I recall the climbers mentioning that a previous group was robbed out there of all their belongings....including their clothes.
Let us know how it goes - my wife is Colombian and asks me to go there all the time. "not yet" I tell her "but it's getting safer so we will go soon".
!Buena suerte!

This question makes me think that the risky adventure of travelling Colombia isn't quite at the level I had expected...

Thanks for the replies. I don't plan on rumbling around in the woods establishing new bouldering areas. That seems foolish, and I sure as hell don't want to pay a guard to initiate a firefight all for a little pebble wrestling.
Not much info on Mountain Project about the route climbing in Suesca. Any other beta? I'm sure the best way to learn about the area is on-site but it's worth a try while I'm thinking about it, and have internet access.
Thanks again.
