I'm working construction at a ranch in Willits CA till Christmas and need to train for a trip down to South America in January, (No i'm not trimming weed, and yes its a legit ranch lol).

Are there any climbers around here that have a bouldering wall or something similar that they wouldn't mind letting an out of place valley SAR guy use occasionally for like 2 months? Santa Rosa is to far two drive all the time!

Cheers

There is a primitive guidebook (folded 8x11 paper) called "Wine Country Rocks" by Chris Summit, copyright 2008.

That shows a few places northeast of Willits, 12-15 miles out on Hwy 162 by Eel River:
-Glass Boulders
-The Hideout
-Main Fork
-Middle Fork/Swallow Rock

Looks like the rock is all Schist with a mix of bouldering, TR, and lead climbs. There is a warning about high water making some of the areas inaccessible in winter.

Head out Low Gap Rd past the Ukiah high school and you'll come to Rattlesnake Rocks, aka the F-You boulders. Pretty decent schist and fun problems, some graffiti and glass. Also, as mentioned above, Eel River has good rock and boulders near Dos Rios, and over in Anderson Valley near Yorkville there are some excellent schist boulders on private property just off the road. I was climbing out there in '92 when my mom lived nearby and have visited several times since. Chris Summit later called those the Boonedock boulders and put up more problems. There's a bunch of problems and a few routes near Squaw Rock just off 101, and of course, plenty of volcanic climbing on Mt. St. Helena. As for a training wall? Good luck. See you at Vertex...

Cheers,
Jerry
