That whole pussy helmet thing started when some climber thought it would be cute to wear the cowboy hat...Lame..!

Jim is wearing headgear, but it was only designed to keep his hair out of rappel breaks while remaining fashionable. Someone should photoshop an orange helmet onto the picture of Jim to bring him up to date and encourage folks to forgo fashion and protect themselves.

did they really land that giant helicopter on top of El Cap?

What, you think El Cap couldn't support it? ;-)

Thanks, everyone for digging out the photos and remembering the stories. Werner’s photo of Neal and Wayne at Camp V is too good, especially with the RR boot in the foreground. Pretty different world for equipment 42 years ago.

Qigong/Tom, thanks for starting this thread. I saw Wayne at a party two years ago, where there were a bunch of old PSU Outdoor Program alumni. Danny Gates also there…

I talked to Neal and he can’t quite believe this discussion is even occurring. He told me about leading the 1st pitch out of camp V, where he somehow pulled a flake off, tumbled back to the ledge where part of the flake fell on top of him (he still doesn’t wear a helmet or use chalk). Wayne was in denial at first, saying “your leg isn’t broken” – despite the obvious deformation. They were able to splint Neal’s legs together with a hammer, which relieved the pain as long he sat still.

Neal said he actually didn’t partake immediately after the accident. He was pretty freaked out about his situation and wanted to keep his wits about him. He didn’t medicate until he saw the rescue was under way in the afternoon. He also received a dose of Demerol, so things then got pretty mellow for him…

Didn’t the team receive the Department of Interior’s Award for Excellence for this rescue?

Cheers
