It is actually about 4.5mb and I get a message that it is too large and photos must be smaller than 8mb. As far as I know 5mb is less than 8mb, but what do I know.

Download IrfanView, then do a save-as. Lower the jpeg quality down from whatever your camera did to about 70-80%, and scale it down to no more than ~1280 wide or tall. For anything that still fits on-screen it should be well under 1 MB and still look plenty good.
If you are trying to put up high quality scans, then find your own host.

Why wont photos between 5-8mb load when it says they have to be under 8mb

I've always resized them to 640 before uploading.

The photos I upload are automatically resized to be less than 8 mb.
