Hey All,

When you set up your system for hauling have you ever used a grigri in place of, let's say, a mini traxion?? I was curious as to what the pros or cons might be. In my head I would think it would work fairly well. I usually set up a simple 3:1 when hauling. Let me know what your thoughts and or experiences are with Grigris and hauls.

my GriGri is usually busy. So i just use my Wallhauler, other wise it just sits there..

A 3:1 is "simple"? O'Really? I find it an incredible pain to set up, having to pass the haul line through an extra pulley. Not only is it time consuming to set up, but it is even more of a pain to operate, having to continually "reset" the inverted ascender + haul line, which requires the manipulation (release then regrip) of two devices, not just one.

Furthermore, the 3:1 is almost always overkill. What are you hauling? A truck? Several of us here just made ten- or twelve-day ascents of El Cap, and I'll bet you a beer there was little if any 3:1 hauling done by any of us. Paul? Marek?

I used 2:1 and 1:1 only. And nobody hauled up more beers than us! 2:1 will do the job most every time, especially if your partner counterweights the haul line.

Why use your Grigri? Don't you have a hauling device? A hauling device uses a pulley with an efficiency of 70% or so for crappy old devices up to 95% for the new Petzl Micro and Pro Traxes. How inefficient must a Grigri be? So inefficient you would probably have to one hand haul the load on one side, while using your other hand to pull the rope through the Grigri. You might as well hand over hand haul, like Warren Harding did.

Why don't you grab a haul line, Grigri, bag of rocks and a camera, go to your local crag or climbing gym or retaining wall or bridge or tree, and give it a try? Let us know how you made out.

Make yourself a 2:1 and try that as well.

Cheers, eh?

Hahaha, this brings back painfully memories! This one time when I was going for the nose as my first aid/bigwall/adventure... We fixed to sickle on day one and we left the haul device up on sickle along with the rack... So, when we went to haul, we thought we should just use the gri gri... It did the job I guess, but was damn brutal! It was one of many noooooob errors that are just stupid! Don't haul on a gri just use a pully!

As for the 3:1... I don't want to go against Pete the big wall master!...but... I kinda love it! I only use 1:1 for most of the time but when I have heavy bags, it is a pretty damn simple fast set up the way I do it and it is pretty easy!

I use a 2:1 Mark Hudon style hauler setup. Low down with heavy bags it give the extra leverage to get the job done. Up high with light bags I leg haul with my russian aider cuffs. It's slow, but far less tiring than 1:1, especially if the belay is awkward (overhanging ledgeless 2 bolts affairs are especially horrible to body haul from).

Use good ball bearing pulleys and get the whole thing well dialed before the wall.

Concur with above. Never thought of the Russian Aider 2:1 leg haul trick, will have to try that.

Mickey - have you ever tried a 2:1? It requires practising, but once you get it dialled it works really well. Make sure you put your "better" pulley on top, and your "not so good" pulley on the bottom.

Weight a haul line and try and pull rope through on a 1:1 with a GriGri and then with a pulley.....that should give you you're answer.

Even with integrating the grigri into a 2:1 system I think it would still be a pain to pull rope through with the added friction. My 2 cents
