Hermann Gollner repeates Pump-O-Rama at 71

“I now get sore and have to ice shoulders and knees a couple times a week but it's pretty effective. Like everyone my age, I have degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis) but I think Bikram (most effective but most irritating yoga) and, lately, flow yoga classes have kept me from stiffening up.

So there you have it. Yoga.

Yes, he was a gym rat at Rocksport. When I was a member there about 15 years ago, we roped up a few times. But he was a super spry 50-something then, no yoga required, ha!

Who could forget that everpresent smile and good nature.

Thanks for posting this. Whenever I read about Jim Donini's feats, it reminds me that there's still hope, but this does so even more. Wow!

Herman also climbs great in Teva's. Some of the best footwork I've ever seen. Happy smile and very encouraging gentleman.

keeping active each day and maintaining valuable emotional relationships are key to aging

My father was introduced to this book and he has sent copies to all his friends. Give it a read if you can and/or watch the clip below to get a brief idea of it...

Rumor has it that Herman was a "chipper" back in his youth--hopefully he's matured with age.
(Interestingly, the post alleging chipping may have been by ST's own Bob D, who used to post on MP, but had the mods remove his account and all his posts!)

gives me hope that I'll still be having fun in 23 years, but I don't aspire to ever climb that high of a rating. Who knows..

I have to agree with Hermann on yoga. Turning 59 this year. I have been practicing Hatha Yoga for 5 years. I became obsessed with rock climbing at age 30 but have always been a mediocre climber. I am more motivated than ever before. This last year, I have on-sighted (outdoors) many new routes that I thought were only possible in the next life. I attribute my recent climbing improvements mostly to yoga. Climbing specific training in the gym helped some but increased flexibility and body awareness created the biggest improvements in my outdoor climbing.

Five years ago at age 53, my posture looked like that of an 80 year old. I looked back at old photos of me with my head and shoulders forward and rounded. Too much sitting in the car and a desk job contributed to my poor posture. Yoga instructors taught me how to sit and stand correctly. I never realized that stand and sitting correctly required so much effort and practice. At first, just sitting correctly cross legged on the floor was exhausting and awkward. After five years of practice I feel better and more fit than I did at 30.

IMHO: Yoga's benefits are body awareness, breath control, exceptional posture, increased flexibility and core strength (every movement starts with engaging your core). These benefits are especially true for older folks like me.

Snoore. When you're 74 years old, like Herb Laeger, and still stance drilling on 5.10-5.11 slab climbs.....you have my respect.
