Winston Churchill is an example of someone with much greater character.

Not to mention more memorable quotes.

John

I've always thought that this Churchill quote translates well to climbing. Like, for instance, sage advice from mentor to pupil.

"If you're going through hell, keep going." - Winston Churchill

Ya know what defines a man, or woman, of character?

Honesty and humility, Someone who shows up and does the job. Their job.

Jimmy Page and Jesus Christ and MLK all are my heroes. So is Reagan, Churchill, and Thatcher.

There are more.

Golda Meier, Maggie Thatcher, and Condie Rice are women who rock in my book. Those 3 chix had more balls than most men....

Seriously.
And you might give Janet an honorable mention in that pack of hard bitches.

But for reals, gimme the Cash.

ST has got it's own excellent Old School role model, Jim Donini.

From history I'll mention Riccardo Cassin, Walter Bonatti and Gaston Rebuffat.

Some climbers are serving as a bridge between Old School and New School. Catherine Destivelle and Voytek Kurtyka are two such examples. In Norway Bjørn Myhrer Lund and Robert Caspersen are examples.

Lynn Hill, Peter Croft, Patrick Edlinger, Chris Sharma and Adam Ondra I'll count as New School role models.

I could have counted Hermann Buhl as Old School and Patrick Berhault as bridge, but they died in the mountains, so I won't.

Just one more Old School role model: Armand Charlet (1900-1975). Never used a piton. Pushed the borders. Back to school...

the guy in yellow was technically blind any one ever look through his coke bottle bottom lensed glasses?

Several times. I believe the lenses were on loan from Mt. Palomar.

And most people who spent/wasted a lot time in the 'Gunks in the '70s said the following at least once:

"Perch! Knock it off!"

Frank Sinatra, huh? Terrific singer, world class really, the Chairman of the Board, but role model? No. Steve McQueen on the other hand... no one cooler, but not my role model.

I prefer Gandhi to Malcolm X. While the latter seemed angry alot, the former simply walked the walk. Or this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKdwsWdH3A4

Desmond Doss. Single handedly saved 75 wounded soldiers on Okinawa in WWII. Way old school, the good kind.
