With all the bad videos out there (car-mounted driving around town - really?), a line in the sand must be drawn.
What is appropriate use?

This sort of came up the other day when we watched 3 noobs with a go pro spend 2 hours filming themselves climbing a 5.6
Note: This thread obviously could get "not work safe" in a heartbeat. Keep cool people. :)

Never climbed All Spice. Didn't film myself if I did. Didn't hold up 3 other parties on it for 3 hours while messing with go pro on an unimpressive send. ( just "click away" wasnt an option)
Chill out man ...
Edit to add: go pro of Ron stuffing a dead wombat... appropriate use of go pro.

Dear lord. That made my palms sweat. Very professionally done vid, they either had aircraft or those little mini copters, in addition to the dudes helmet cam. @3:40 ish I'm thinking, dude needs a parachute on his back:-)

I talked to my good backpacker/fisherman pal Derek yesterday about Go-Pros.
He was not very impressed with his for his uses, which led to his selling it.
He says it's too involved, too much gets missed much of the time during set-up, and he's much happier, all-around, with a point & shoot.
For one such as myself, who has no use for action recording because I don't do action, being such an old duffer and past all that, a good tripod and my EOS Rebel do just fine. The camera has the ability to create videos, but I'm not into exploring that option just now. Nice to have, though.
They sell fast cars to idiots, too. Look at some of those results.
It's like anything, in that if you want to get good results you need to practice daily, much as eKat used to when she learned to shoot in school. I remember her telling us that a while back.

nicely done...
using a GoPro one has to be aware of the wide angle lens, good for stuff close up, not so much for long shots.. the video has a mixture of cameras with appropriate lenses
the drone use is certainly much better than a helicopter (or fixed wing) for such productions, much less intrusive, much more creative shots (probably in fewer takes over a shorter period of time) and a lot safer for the pilot and camera man (who are on the ground and not flying). Probably a lot less expensive too.
point and shoot cameras, these days, have great HD video capability and a variety of lens settings
like anything else, you get better the more you use them
and also, most of what you shoot ends up "on the cutting room floor"

We use it to put under water when sailing if we need to check out the bottom of the boat...if we've snagged line, have damage after striking something etc. Saves a dive in shark infested waters! Recreationally? Not yet. The last thing I need to see is me endoing on my Mtn bike.
Love Danny's Santa Cruz. Clearly the reason he was able to do that. Ha ha. Pucker factor. HUGE for me.

Friend of mine bought one for her son, I was intrigued and ended up buying one. They are wide angle, but the long shots are not bad. The lower end models actually do the long shots better. My first trip I used it on was Laurel Mt. Ended up with megabytes are worthless video, but it edited down to a palatable video, I missed a lot of good shots on the descent. On another trip I got a nice time lapse of clouds over Lone Pine Peak.
What I like most about the camera is that it is bullet proof. I carry the camera in the housing, you can stuff it anywhere and not worry about it. I have thrashed every Canon Powershot I have owned by carrying it in my pocket.
I do not regret buying it, I have to refine my technique with it. I go solo on most trips so I am limited in what shots I can get, I need to look around and get more far shots, the straight ahead close shots are not interesting. One accessory I just got I call the selfie stick, an extendable pole you can mount the camera on. Should add a better perspective, and it will double as a pole for my tarp tent.

John, I'm crackin' up cuz you look so "HAPPY" in the first one! Good job of editing that in. (This is at @ a minute into the video.)
Viewing number two, let me say the still at the beginning is a sucker shot. It's not the same quality throughout, not even close. The fact that you are solo is telling.
It's telling me you are a loner, but you want to share the beauty of the solitude. The comments are spontaneous and real and somehow add to the tale. It is a TAD long, however, for most audiences.
Pretty sure you realize all this. Whatever, it's fun watching and thanks for posting both of these. Glad you had a good time, no nasty weather, and got down safe.

Misteree, I think the horse is already out of the barn with Sharknado having been filmed entirely with GoPros. Jus sayin'. We have no limits now and are doomed.
The devices are huge now in surfing. Even big prizes for the best work.
