Best of luck to the Pompa clan.

Two heads are often better than one. Hopefully they got turned around and lost, not seriously injured.

Let's hope they've made some good choices, like hunker down and figure out some signalling.

It did snow 9/26, 9/27, and 9/28 in the Sierra, some areas got some
decent snow amounts, and some cold temps according to some
of the TR's recently posted on our board(HST), which could
have made for some dangerous icy/slippery conditions, especially
if they were inexperienced.

They were prepared for 4 days of hiking, we just don't know how prepared.

... probably were smart, and just hunkered down for the storm a day or 2.

...Following tips from other hikers, searchers were able to find the couple in a rugged, off-trail area in the Rae Lakes region, said Jana McCabe, a parks spokeswoman.

“They appear to be in good condition, but a little scraped and bruised,” McCabe said. “They have four search-and-rescue team members with them right now.”

It is unknown how the Pompas ended up off the trail, McCabe said, but they had originally planned to hike the 41.4-mile Rae Lakes Loop...

They said on the news that they were "very experienced hikers" and they got lost in rough terrain near Charlotte Lake while attempting the Rae Lakes loop.

Odd

Edit, I guess if there was snow on the ground it could be easy to lose the trail around Charlotte Lake since it's a bunch of flat sand. Still kinda odd

I think they left out 'poorly'. I thought 'experienced hikers' took a map
and a compass and knew how to use them?

I'll cut these 2 some slack. Foggy, almost a whiteout with a couple of
inches of slippery snow and you're doing the slip-n-slide butt crashdown comedy routine which becomes painful after the 1st dozen falls.

Other hikers tracks leading in 4 different directions in the snow
just east of Charlotte Lk and maybe one or two navigation errors
and suddenly you don't know where the hell your are.
Barely see the trees 10ft away so you camp, watch, and wait.

It is smart to hunker down, when I am late getting back my wife knows to hang on for at least 48 hrs or so, maybe longer if a storm hits, before calling for search.

The two times I have become really LOST was in white out, foggy conditions.

You can't locate any pks or landmarks, even if you have a compass, map etc....

If they were near Charlotte Lk you're telling me they couldn't find the lake?
And if you can find the lake Stevie Wonder could find the Ranger Station.

Guy, I got lost once in a whiteout on Rainier, in winter, above the treeline.
We headed downhill by map and compass but went over a white bump that put
us in the adjacent drainage. No probs, just tack on another 10 miles of walking.
