I seem to recall somebody, I thought it was Lou, hauling SCUBA gear to the
top and going into that lake BITD. Now that's crazy.

Very cool. You occasionally hear about people hunkering down in those when they get caught on the summit by storms, but I had no idea they were so extensive.

I intended to visit the caves when I was on the summit of Rainier, but it was really cold and snowing hard and we couldn't find anything in a whiteout.
Getting electrocuted over and over in a terrible lightning storm on the summit also put a damper on searching for caves.
There are some nice ice caves at the base of Big Four Mountain further north.

Reilly, 25 years ago I bought an old set of tcu's from a guy in Boulder who was into high altitude cave diving. I'd never heard of it before. An odd combination of activites but apparently there are new places to explore up there, or at least there were.

In "The Challenge of Rainier" there is a great story of a guy who ventured into those caves BITD and spent several hours telepathically communicating with super natural beings that lived down in there. Good stuff. Wonder what's in those fumes.

SLR, sounds like you wussed out on Ranier? How can you let a little electrocution and whiteout stop you from a methodical hands-and-knees search over an extended area? Maybe training regimen should include fork in a light socket or biting lamp cords.

I have been collecting ice cave photographs for a few years. Here are some from Iceland, specifically from Vatnajokull Nat. Park and Skaftafell ice caves.

A bazillion years ago, on a solo mission to North Palisade, I crawled into the cave between the glacier and lake. I still cherish the pictures. Nothing special except to me.
