Vision man...ya gotta have vision...
Topic Author's Original Post - Sep 23, 2014 - 12:29pm PT
I know there are a few here who hung with the incomparable Inez D. (Gnar Gnar) a few years back. Mutual friend emailed me this morning that her phone # was reporting disconnected and no response on email. Wondering if there is cause for concern. Anyone here still in touch?

Thx!

Yup, Drixelius. Tried Ghost...he, like myself, has sort of dropped off the communications the last few years. Just looking for anyone that might have stayed in touch.

Note: I don't have any reason to believe there's cause for concern. Could be as simple as changing phone companies, or just dropping the phone all together and busy not emailing (Gads!!).

I met Inez on rec.climbing many decades ago, and eventually spent a lot of time with her. Incredible person, and a good friend with whom I lost touch when she retired from work and climbing and moved to the east coast about ten years ago.

I think she was working with Allen Steck on a writing project not too long ago, so maybe he knows.

Thanks stich, but those are all old. (last log into MP was 2008)

I also met her via rec.climbing a hundred years ago, and did a buttload of climbing with her until she moved out to West By-God. Maybe I'll turn this into a Gnar-Gnar photo thread.

I suck at distance relationship maintenance type sh*t, so I have no excuses. Just figured here might be a good place to check for random connections.

Really just bumping. Thanks!!!

Correct, I believe they're both dead. She left Berkeley over 10 years ago, so that was probably done quite a while back. There was a newer gmail addy that got no response as well. Still looking...thanks for the info and replies so far. :-)

I last saw Inez at Al STeck's 90th birthday about 3 years ago. She was living in Florida, had left West Virginia. She of course left UC Berkeley about 13-14 years ago, I believe.

Al Steck knows where she is and her email. slimfox@att.net. HIs daughter would also know, ssteck@suddenlink.net

Yup, she's in Florida. Gave her climbing gear away and is a paddling queen now. Talk to her not very long ago. Doing well.

Robert - any chance you have a number for her you could IM over?

Maybe my favorite shot of Inez on a route we did...East Butt of MCR.

I never met her but she was a tall presence, while claiming a hummingbird wingspan, on rec.climbing. I would love to hear that she is well.

Here's a link to a trip report she wrote when she attended my wedding to Hilde.

Thanks for the number Robert. That number is the one disconnected and mail to that address hasn't been returned.
Now we're stumped. When was the last time you talked to her?

Hmmm. That's the current info I have. I spoke with her about 8 months ago. Maybe someone can get a hold of Alan and see if he has it.

Simply email Al Steck and his daughter and you will eventually get the full deal. She would never go out of contact with Al. If that is unfruitful, let me know.

I sent an email earlier. Thanks Peter. Actually climbed with Allen (with Inez) a bunch of years ago. He's probably the oldest guy to climb The Mace in Sedona (at 69). Don't recall if I've met his daughter, but have met Lee a few times.

We'll get to the bottom of this yet! :-)

Not sure, but I think her mom, The Widow Drixelius, as she coyly termed her, and being back in Austria, might be needing some help from Inez. But it's only a guess. Inez has lead a variety of lives at this point.
