I live in a "tinder box" as one fire official described it. Fire season is a worry every year. We have an escape plan.
Last week sitting in camp at Upper Pines, the wind was blasting through the Valley and I thought if a cigarette or car fire started a blaze at Bridalveil, we would be toast.
Maybe the Ahwahnee had the right idea of how to survive in a box canyon.
The Awahnechee and other aboriginal groups changed the environment of the Yosemite area. Parts of valley floors were intentionally burned each year to encourage the growth of acorn-bearing black oaks.[101] Fire kept forests open, reducing the risk of ambush, and the open areas helped to expand and maintain meadows.
I asked a fireman about how fast a fire can burn, he said it depends on the wind, but it can move a lot faster than you can run.
The following night we were barbecuing New York steaks at Crane Flat and with it's 3 escape routes. Just saying.
