Seems to be a correlation of rampant theft with liberal controlled areas--guess the idea is that the "little people" are just righting some social injustices and the bourgeoisie hikers/climbers are getting what they deserve by having their ill-gotten possessions reallocated to more deserving folks.
(Now there is marked auto theft from some right-wing tweaker infested parts of the US too, I admit, but as a generalization, more libs -> more property crime. Think Canada, Europe, California, etc.)

The insane (at least from US perspective) theft from autos in BC has been well known since I got into climbing early 90s (and probably long before then). As I recall, when visiting BC, standard operating procedure is to remove everything of conceivable value from your car, leave it with windows rolled down, and hope the local criminals aren't sufficiently malevolent to vandalize.

I don't keep my registration in my car for reasons just like this.

Who is dumb enough to leave anything of value in their car when they park at a trailhead?

You could always choose to live somewhere that doesn't get visited by theiving trash consistantly.

Luck might play a part...
But choosing to live where humans treat each other with respect makes a big difference.
Like I said, we all make choices in life.

Sure as f uck not in Vegas.
What a shithole.
Although Red Rocks is nice, and having easy access to hookers and blow is cool. If you're into that.
Why do you choose to live in Vegas, Comic?

what do you do when you are on an extended road trip and living out of your vehicle? I skipped some places on my last road trip because I had heard that there had been break-ins. That sucked.

I'm not sure which is worse, thieves or the vandals. A friend had all four tires and his spare slashed while he was on an extended backpacking trip. 20+ miles of dirt roads from anywhere.

I get a local storage unit and put my stuff away. I have done this for decades. In places like bishop you gotta plan months ahead of time.

Be careful where you park your house too. In our houses at Finnskogen thieves have broken in two times the last year. There is nothing of great value in the houses, but the thieves don't know before they have tried, do they... The first time they broke in they damaged one door. The second time they chopped their way through one door with an axe and damage three windows. The last time they also signed our "cabin book" with the signature you see below.

The police on the Norwegian side of the border had never seen a signature like this. Some thieves were later caught on the Swedish side of the border. I don't know if they were "our thieves". And I don't know what the Swedish police knew about the "artist".

Most thieves are cunning but ultimately lazy and stupid as all hell.
Even successful thieves forget they carry with them only negative energy.
Outsmarting thieves is a lifelong battle I don't mind waging.
There are so many things one can do to make their lives more miserable than they already are.
