Ranger? I call bullsh#t, that man sleeping it off in the photo clearly looks like a climber.
If there wasn't a uniform of course.

Does it cost $35/night to go camping in a California state park because of the need to pay these people?
This is why it costs more to rent a bare patch of dirt in a park than to rent a modest apartment?
Even if someone else planted the beer: sleeping on the job, or even after getting off work but while still in uniform representing, is unacceptable.

The story stated; "[w]orried that the ranger might be hurt, the man tried to wake him, calling out “sir! sir!” and banging on the front and back of the vehicle, he said. Then he reached through the open window. “I shook him, really shook him,” the man said. “And then I saw the beer between his legs.”"
The very first thing I saw in the photo was the can of beer, now way the concerned citizen did not see it until he shook the guy. And why bang on the front and back of the car, that makes no sense, you are going to walk right up to the window.
Maybe the cop was way tired and on medication (hence not passing sobriety test later)...and this witness dude put the beer can there and then snapped the photo.

The CHP arrested him for DUI. You seriously think this was staged. He fled the scene when he realized he was caught.

Damn, what a foolish Ranger....Looks like he was serving and protecting his beer.
FortMentäl,...The California Park camping fees very from $15:00 to $35:00.....I have never paid $35.00. for a campsite,..i always snag a walk-in site, which tends to be $10;00 cheaper.
State parks with hook-ups( old school hook-ups..(-; ) usually cost a tiny bit more...$40-45..and the higher campground fee areas, tend to have showers available.

"The very first thing I saw in the photo was the can of beer, now way the concerned citizen did not see it until he shook the guy."
That's because you already were clued into looking there. You expected it from the title of this thread.
Some one coming upon that scene-(you), would most likely have been concerned with the condition of the dude and noticed it after that. You'd expect maybe a can of soda or something at first glance.
edit:
"It was in Humboldt. The surprising thing is it wasn't a bong."

I think Malibu Creek is $35.00.
Leo Carrillo SP and Point Magu, Sycamore, are $45.00.
And I thought I saw some of the Ventura beach CG's are $55.00.

This is just too bad.
That ranger is only human.
He did take every last one of the bad steps in order to end up in this mess.
So, I feel nothing for the ranger - anyone going to take the side that tries to support that this ranger was in control and was trying his best within his personal alcohol problem to just do his job?
No, I am on the side that says he was begging for help, and now he has it along with this on his record.
The bigger question I have is: How many humans in how many occupations would it take for you to notice a pattern?

If you want to drink on the job ... be a bartender.
That's how I did it. At one of the joints I worked, my boss would pour me a whiskey - or two - the minute I showed up for work.
Hopefully he got a good look at the toilets in the County Jail, because they're a hell of a lot cleaner there than anything you'll see in a State Park for thirty-five bucks a night.

I have more sympathy for the Kings County deputy. Seems like firing was a bit extreme for his case.
From the Kings County article
Richtmyer is the second deputy fired by Urquhart this week. Darrion Holiwell, who has been charged with helping his wife work as a prostitute, stealing department ammunition and illegally delivering testosterone, was terminated on Tuesday.
I know testosterone will make you do same crazy sh@t, but pimping your wife out?

For *punishment*, he's been placed on paid leave. He earned himself a paid vacation! Just in time for Labor Day.
In a just world, he'd get this:

Who knows whether he was up all night because his wife left him and took the kids and dog, after finding out he had been sleeping with a co-worker.

I don't understand what all the fuss is about, he was very conscientious about following proper safety procedures to not spill the beer even in the event of a nap. Now spilled beer, that would be a crime. Even Keystone.
