We got drizzled on when we were setting camp (after approach Charlotte Dome from Kearsage Pass) up last Sept and the clouds were still there when we woke up, so we hiked back out and are trying again this year.
(1) on p. 68 of the second edition, ST states that there is a great campsite at 36.7858 N 118.4739 E with a lush spring right where the old trail heads up to Gardiner Pass.
I found a manzanita-covered slope at this coordinate but did manage to find a flat spot (and a spring) downhill from this ... Did I miss something?
(2) More important, though, given the drought, will there still be water? (I have not made it up to the Sierras at all this year ...)
Thanks,
Alfred

Alfred,
If you found a flat spot near a spring, that's it or them, forget the GPS, you were likely there, prime camping spots to be sure! There are several spots on the west side of spring and the stream and a higher spot, just uphill and east of spring about 50 yards.
Here's a pic of spot I camped that was just west and downhill of spring.
Here's a pic of the spring and stream in July, 2012--that spring has the best tasting water ever, no need to filter either!
Maybe someone that was up there this summer can confirm if the spring is still running now? I would guess it is, but perhaps at lower levels than in 2012. Good luck!

Just judging by the types of plants in that picture I'd say that spring run all year pretty much every year.

was there at the Supertopo camp site in late July this year; spring/creek flowing very nicely.

We camped at a big flat area just next to Charlotte Dome. In the morning we just wandered down the slabs to the start of the route, just a few minutes as I recall. Then after the route we descended the easy slabs straight back to the campsite - again, really quick. I don't recall the spring, but there must have been something quite close. Here's the camping spot:

I don't have my gps handy to check but I recall thinking that all the super topi elevations were off by a couple hundred feet in most cases. The spring and flat spots (we camped just uphill a bit) were pretty obvious and deluxe. I recall thinking you could put a whole campground there. It was conveniently about halfway between the start of the rout and the start of the descent so made for a great base to climb from. See the pics others posted, the spring seemed pretty big but that was a couple years ago.
