I find it kind of messed up that they kept him in jail instead of a mental health ward. it is obvious the guy has some anxiety issues dealing with people and all he ever stole was food, fuel and clothing. The part where the judge ordered him to get a job is rediculous. Dude is way to out there to be able to deal with a job. they should hook him up with SS disability and let him camp in the woods, come into town for his check, get food and supplys and then go back in the woods. some folks simply can not fit in with society. many become homeless. Living homeless in the woods is much safer than liveing in the city...

I think a number of people must have spotted this guy before , knew of him, felt pity, and therefore remained silent .As long as his thefts were relatively petty he was strangely tolerated ----until the warden got curious.

There was a similar guy in the Clearwater river country of Idaho in the 1940's or 50's. He stole from Forest Service and logging company cabins as I recall. There was a book published locally about it. Tried googling the book but can't find it. I think it was published in St. Maries Idaho in the early 1970's. My mom had a copy and I read it years ago.

More googling finds this:
