I'm sure this idea has been bandied about already, so sorry if redundant, but Cmac (etc.) - why not have a '+' or a 'thumbs up' icon that readers could click to bump TRs that they like?

Sometimes there is not much to say to a TR in the thread except for 'sick' or 'great stuff' or similar and so many don't really comment. They just passively enjoy reading the TR and it gets lost.

I know I for one don't comment on every TR that I enjoy because I have nothing unique or additive to say. But I'd definitely make the effort to click on a '+' icon (or similar) to bump the TR.

And yes, I know I could sign-in to write 'bump' but that to me is the same as 'nice!' And whether you agree or not, I know that subtle laziness would keep me from doing it (as is the case now) but I would do a one-click '+' or whatever every time.

Just a thought

I've suggested the same before. CMAC, make it happen so TRs can compete with Politarded threads!

As noted, many TRs have 1000's of views and only 15 comments.

Why not just add a comment of any kind? Accomplishes the same task.

Why not just click the Trip Reports tab? Tada all off topic threads disappear.

You can sort the TRs by latest post or number of views.

Roger that. Thanks for the suggestions. It is a nice reminder that there is that easy navigation to just TR's. I'd actually forgotten about that.

That said, part of the thinking wasn't to drown out the typically hilarious shite show that is the OT aspects of the Forum, but more as a way to give the OP of TRs some recognition that would be more than 14 comments and then disappearing from the main page. I was hoping by suggesting a way to more generally highlight them or provide an easy way to express gratitude that we might get more of that good content. As is, I fear that some people who would normally have continued posting great TRs are instead going radio silent and the nutters/OT posters, etc are taking over which is overall dragging down the value of this Forum as a 'climber's forum.'

But whatever. Carry on. The nice thing about a Forum is that it is community driven. If the community wants to value nonsense over climbing content then rock and roll.

if any changes at all are made to the antiquated software, ST will lose its magical campfire qualities, you see

Even with a seperate trip report page, they still need a comment to "bump" and keep on top of the page. Writing a little comment for every TR you enjoy not only takes time, but also fills the TR with tons of one line comments that dont really add to the discussion, and in some cases present a lot of fluff for future readers to wade through while digging for more relevant comments. I like the idea of a "+" or "Like" button, and of course if you wanted to leave a comment you still could. It would give the option to support climbing related posts quickly without cluttering up the TR with comments.

I've been climbing for a decade at a run-rate of about 20 weekends per year - mostly in the Valley, but also 5-6 trips to Jtree a year, Tahoe, Pinnacles, etc. And yes, that's the real number.

So it's not a matter of climbing more and caring about forums less...

It is a matter of making a creative suggestion that would help to keep our favorite 'Climbing' forum at least mostly (or partly) related to climbing. Because there is the very real risk that people like Pellucid Wombat, WML, etc will no longer post reports of places in the PacNW or Red Rocks or any other number of places that I've been to once or twice but would like to see more of and get stoked on by living vicariously through TRs. How cool is it to come on here during some particularly heinous work day and see that Peter Croft Angel's Wings TR and think - 'Damn! How gorgeous! I need to get out there!' I would not have seen it if some people who believe in cultivating this place did not bump that to Page 1. Even more cool is when you get a TR from a place you don't expect to ever get to travel to or from someone who climbs in a style that you don't expect to so you get to see how other people are finding enjoyment in the hills. Thinking ice climbing for example whereas I'm pretty much a dry/warm rock enthusiast.

It's also to be clear not that I'm trying to censor non-climbing content or that I even dislike that non-climbing content. BUT I do worry that there is less and less great content on here as pple seem to ignore TRs and go on and on about OT stuff. That has to have a cumulative effect of reducing the motivation some people would otherwise have to post up their recent outings. That's why I made the suggestion to provide an easy way to show support without having to just type 'nice work.' 'Strong!' etc. Which to Matty's point seems hollow.

But anyway, I'll just go to the TR page from now on and do what I can to comment and bump the ones I like.

Anyway, back to your flame wars. I'm heading to the Valley in an about an hour to - ya know - climb.
