Planning on running from Onion Valley TH to Cedar Grove and back on the weekend of the 23rd. A few of us are training for Kodiak 100 in Big Bear this Sept, plus a 46 mile traverse of Zion in Nov. Anyone done this trail run before and wish to share their experience? Not sure if there is smoke up there beyond Kearsarge.

Skiied it a few times, but what you are doing is more impressive. Good luck, and post up!

Kuwabara and G-funk have both done a few routes, and a few successful ones that I don't see here on his blog. You can probably reach him through there and they'd share info.

Gonna be fun fer sure. Nah, gonna do this run in luxury by staying the night at the Cedar Grove Lodge then run back the following morning. I know, I know....weak sauce. ;)

I've done each direction but not consecutively. I'm no expert and the only advice I have is that trekking poles are mans greatest invention!

Edit: I also didn't find it necessary to carry water on any part of that trail.

Thanks Dood! Gunno carry our running vests, water bottles, food and essentials (headlamp, light running jacket, change of running gear for the return). Anyone know of a filter manufacture who makes one that simply attaches to the bottle lid. I ran upon a filter that is made by Hydropal. Great price.....retarded shipping prices. $24 dollars for a 3 oz fliter lid???????

I know there are plenty of bottles with built in filters but I haven't seen any that came separate and can be attached to your own bottle, but I'm sure you know more about those than I do.

I haven't filtered water up there for years and I'm still alive! As an extra bonus there's now an alternative to stupid flagil if you get giardia. Instead of taking flagil for like 10 days and feeling crappy the whole time, there a medicide that's only one dose!

It costs about $30 instead of $3 for flagil but it's worth it and I no longer fear the little parasites. (that are really rare in the first place)

The Sawyer Squeeze Mini may be the filter your looking for. I think it will fit a soda bottle top or various water bags like the one that comes with it or more durable evernew bags. Haven't used ours enough to comment on durability but sure is light.

I was in that area just last month running the Rae Lakes Loop. It's certainly a beautiful area and you glimpse all the granite walls in that look so appealing for climbing. Water was definitely not a problem along Bubb's Creek last month.

Here's the Rae Lakes running trip report (with photos)

I didn't even consider doing your proposed trans Sierra route because I thought it would be way too long, but it looks like it's roughly 40 miles and 14k elevation change in a round trip --- it'll be a blast!

I also am thinking of Zion Traverse next year in the late Spring (didn't realise that November was possible because it looked like the trail might be covered with snow by then).

Oh and the smallest filter I could find is indeed the Sawyer Squeeze and I used it on a standard 1L platypus soft bottle.

From an earlier thread, it looks like Grand Canyon R2R2R might require permits soon, and that was a truly awesome run (trip report) and probably reasonable in November as well.

I like the visual approach. Read eujin's report.

Mooch passed out, started scribbling something about a spire when he came too. Has a vision for a backcountry route now.

I told him Vitaly and crew have already sewn it all up.

Running in the Sierra. FEH! Stoopid stick figures!

That's crazy to run over the Sierra!

vitaly: there are conflicting mileage reports on the Rae lakes loop but from all the gps tracked strava traces I saw indicated that it's somewhere between 41 and 43 miles in total.
