I never had the good fortune to know this man, but through Cragman's reports and others here, I can't get him out of my mind. I think all of us can identify with him. It's the nature of our community. We're lifers when it comes to the mountains, to sticking our necks out now and then. Anyway, I struggled to put my thoughts and feelings into words in a long-ish blog post, if you're interested. I hope his family and friends can find peace.

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, Matt's story is our story in so many ways and hits close to home.
Hey, Rotting, that must be tough, seeing that constant reminder. I guess Bob Greene will stay all summer? I would in his place, hike that country every way I could to soak it in, even if there were no chance of finding Matt.
Check your knots AND tell people where you're headed.

You captured a lot in this piece Bad, thank you. My heart goes out to Mathews family, as a dad I cannot wrap my head around such a profound loss. For me there is some solace knowing he left this place being who he was, that true identity of intrinsic stuff at the core of being a mountaineer. A hardy Berg Heil to you and thanks again.

Excellent piece. It represents what so many of us have felt or do feel still as we head into the mountains. I will share it with my family and with some of my non-climbing friends as it will help them understand why we go.
These days I am stuck in Orange County, riding a desk, and I think of Matthew Greene everyday. My soul is there with him.
My thoughts and condolences go out to Matthew's family.

Matthew's spirit is among the tribe in the Minarets/Ritter/Banner Range; Walter Starr Jr. forever now 1924.....
Rest in beautiful peace Matthew Greene, my sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

TheMaster - I completely agree. I am a husband and a father now...a grandfather too. I cannot begin to imagine what Matthew's family is going through. I pray they are granted granted peace.

Yeah, Charlie D., I've been thinking a lot about Walter Starr, Jr., too. But for the determination of Clyde, we'd never know where Starr ended up.

Just got back from backpacking at Rockbound and had the Ritter Range as my backdrop to the East. Was thinking about Matthew a lot. He lives on through our thoughts. Will post a couple pics in awhile.
Great write up Bad.

Simply beautiful.
I look at my young man son and cannot conceive of the ache Matthew's family is suffering.
