We started at 4:00 AM, got to the route with one party in front of us, got it done as a party of six and all but one of us made it to the cafeteria before closing.

(He took a nap at the falls and made it back by 9:00 claiming it was still daylight)

No one was younger than late 40's and some not in peak condition.

There's no way I'd want to drag camping gear up there to do that route.

There is one other consideration though, being from a low lying isle you will be operating between 6500 and 9000 ft.

Adding to the chorus of "in a day." Even if you top out at dusk, the hike back down is on a very nice trail, so you'll be fine.

If you're concerned, you can do a true alpine start. Maybe 2am? Normally I'd say that's ridiculously early for Snakedike, but if you want to guarantee the summit against thunderstorms, it should work.

Edit: The climb is best done in a single day. But if the goal is the experience of Yosemite, then 2 days is not a bad choice. Vernal Falls, with the slickrock waterslides and the Emerald Pool (look but don't touch!), and Little Yosemite Valley, are quite nice. Good places to spend a day, and better than The Pines tenements for sure! But if you can't get a camping permit, don't be deterred from doing the climb anyway.

Start at 2 AM
You'll be 1 day past full moon. Great moonlight until dawn.

And always good advice.

done it both my ways-my wife and i had a very hush hush bivy near lost lake, just sleeping bag and pads, light stove for coffee, so very little extra weight-maybe 7 more lbs. Very fun to hang out in this killer spot with a view of the s.face. And then we picked up that stuff on the way back, no problem.
In a day was cool but long, we too were so tired we couldn't really cope, just ate a bag of chips, had a rum and coke and fell asleep in the dirt near someone else's camp 4 site. Good times!
