well, not really... I was there last Friday night taking pictures and tried a technique of waving a string of led lights around. Because this is a 30 second exposure you never see that you are in the picture.

I can imagine this group can give me some creative uses of this technique related to climbing, other than a red blast out the butt... that's too obvious, but maybe the right composition...

For those not familiar, Bodie is a ghost town east of the Sierras, er, Sierra Nevadas, I mean Sierra Nevada.

I shoot with a Nikon D800e and the 14- 24 2.8 lens.
I think settings for both of these was:
14 mm
f 2.8
ISO 3200
30 seconds
White balance 3850
light painting with a xenon light
(this is pretty much a formula during a new moon, sometimes go up to iso 6400)

Here's another from this week - the Mobius Arch in the Alabama Hills. I was tired and couldn't wait another few hours for the Milky Way to rise into the center of the arch.

What light source did you use for the flames?

Burning stick?

30 seconds is fun.

other than a red blast out the butt...

I think a blue light would work best for that

very creative. What's the light on the horizon in the first shot, the bustling metropolis of Bridgeport? or Lee Vining? fading dusk?

Really nice. I miss the silent hum of the rest of the universe when such a sky is about; the title picture made that sound, or brought it out from wherever it hides the rest of the time.

I always thought the milky way looked more like the darky way and that picture confirms it. Beautiful, thanks for sharing.

Nice.

Its why I like camping in the Tushar Range, one of the places in the lower 48 with the least light pollution.
A great place for astronomy.

Bodie is a pretty strange place with amazing diurnal temperature span.

There seems to be preponderance of Milky Way shots going around. They all astound and ground me. Thanks for sharing.
