People still doing this? I've long thought the idea really cool but the last few years the mass emails have been attracting more and more people who seemingly treat it like a 5k. Either way hopefully the peaks are fun and good quality and not dangerous.

Not sure what are you saying, how do you know people treat it like 5 k, have you done it and ran into a lot of incompetent people? But yes people still do this and peaks are usually 2nd to 4th class. It is whatever an individual is comfortable with. Most know their limits. It is not an event where someone watches where you go or wipes your ass if you can't downclimb from the summit to firm ground. Info is on Bob's site. I believe snwburd.com

Well, I'd guess that how close you live to the City depends upon what kind of slave you are.
I'd like to prefer to simply wake up with a weather eye, tag a summit if I'm feeling like I'll make it back to home plate...preferably not too long after dark.

Thanks for the link. I like the easier set of peaks. Last year the buzz around the challenge was big, there were many people I met at the gear shop and black sheep that were all gung-ho without any experience, a different type of hiker than you normally see, and heard stories of crowded and loose ascents. V you are saying this isn't the case? Good to hear.

It could be a different case from one day to another. When I did the challenge in 2010 there were all kinds of people who showed up each day. There were a few epics too. But this is a self run event. East H participant is going in under his/her own guidance. If one peak is hard, there are alternative peaks u can do. Freedom of the hills. No guides.

Bob Burd's detailed knowledge of the sierra peaks, including obscure unknowns is pretty awesome. Last years challenge and previous years..it really opens your eyes to areas that might be unfamiliar in the Sierra.... discovered some new places such as the "mini incredible hulk" (*wink Vitaliy) through Bob Burd, and during the sierra challenge, Bob burd is a big fan of "linking up peaks" doing relatively unknown (will it go?) ridges, sometimes very gnarly with testing your abilities with route finding and comfort level with free soloing. One of these ridge traverses that comes to mind last year was the traverse from twelve flags to broken finger...ep!c...
Bob burd is also a very cool cat-he is generally liked/loved/adored by all, is popular with the ladies (wink), and is just a boss.
I regret not being able to participate this year...as I am injured and on semi-long time frame recovery at the moment.

Yeah, don't try it. It's dangerous. You might get hurt or killed.
Sheesh.
Pretty much the most badazz thing going on right now.

loose is not my reservation.....the its the crowded part. Crowded with random strangers at that. No thanks. But I am not much of a social animal.
I agree it is pretty cool, just not my thing. I am solo 90% of the time because I like it like that
but carry on carrying on
