Who? You!
What? Rock climbing! Not politics!
Where? Red Rock Canyon NCA, Clark County, Nevada
When? October 31-November 2, 2014
Camping Beta? GROUP CAMPSITE E - Furthest group site from road and with the best bathrooms.
So there seemed to be enough interest in the previous thread regarding this to finally step up to the plate and commit to it.
What I need from you? Number one, if you are coming, and number two, are you going to be staying in the group site we are going to reserve for this? If so, we will be asking that you pay your portion of the campsite fee.
This should be a really fun event, as it will reunite some of us who have shared a campfire before, and will provide us the opportunity to share a real campfire rather than the virtual one we have shared on here.
I'm super stoked, and look forward to fantastic weather and even better climbing and company.

Would be incredible if the Chief could make it. Seriously. I'd love to climb with that guy some day. Last time I talked to him he said his health might not let him climb, but even if he would come up to hang out, I'd be super excited. Meeting people from the internet never gets old. 90% I am in.
Following weekend is a AAC Bishop meetup. Climbing at Owens and all the bouldering could be fun. If you are taking a car and are looking for more things to do, Jim (and everyone else), that might be a good idea. Hope to make it out to both of these events.

I've never been to RR for climbing, and am interested. It depends on how I'm doing after the Dolomites and Facelift. It may be too much and too soon after 2 other trips. If I am able to make it, I wouldn't be camping.

Seems me and my partner are in. If work permits I will take the following week off and will have 30th of October through 9th of November off. Will spent more time pulling on sweet crimps with the homies and be more flexible. Would you guys want to do a supertopo outing for the CLoud Tower on one of those days? That one goes fast and we can link up partners/do teams of 3 if there are not enough leaders.

I'm still undecided on my participation in the shindig, but there's less than a 50% probability at this point. I didn't really get enough climbing in the Dolomites (due to weather) to assess my physical condition, and therefore my ability to climb anything. That's my primary issue.
A secondary problem: Brokedownclimber's pickup is also currently Brokedownpickup, and having a new engine installed. Bwaaaaahhhhh! (Insert tears here).
Tertiary problem: I don't know about Red Rocks and what's there for someone of my ability level? Currently around 5.7-5.8. Descents? Approaches?

Thanks for the encouraging words! I guess I'm still OD'd on travel at this point after the 5,500 miles spent on United Airlines from Munich this past Monday. I need to begin hitting the Health Club to rebuild some muscles softened by (dis)use in the Dolomites, where the weather was the rainiest in 80 years; my projected 8-9 days of climbing was diminished to only 2 days on the rocks over 4 weeks there. I'm still procrastinating about going to facelift for a few days at the tail end of things; I still love the Valley, too. And then...there's always Joshua Tree calling, as is City of Rocks....

WL, what day were you thinking for Brownstone?
I don't want to go back through a hundred posts to find out.
Big Mike, I am staying through Wed AM, planning on meeting up with you to climb (and others too of course if they are still around), on Monday and Tues. I thing Cosmic has a plan for us for one of those days if he is back in Vegas.

For the 5.fun types, I'm down with sport cragging First Pullout on Saturday or Sunday. Panty Wall, Hamlet Wall, and the new Discovery Wall, 5.3-5.10 but mostly 7s and 8s.
I'd like to get on some multi-pitch as well, but I'm pretty limited grade wise and don't want to slow anyone down.

Yeah, there are a couple lower rating climbs out there. With the days being short though it will have to be a very early start, with an hour and a half approach. (For me that probably equates to 2 hours.)
We will see how it goes, just wanted to throw some options out there and will go with the group consensus.

South winds and 10 degrees above normal on friday, but then the mercury plunges.
At least 10 degrees below normal by monday.
Sorry guys, looks like the cusp is upon us.
And days are getting short. What time do they allow starting the Brownstone Wall approach (which I care not to reverse in the dark again).
At VoF I get to camp among the crags with stone's throws approaches.
RR is better in late spring.

Hey all, Weston and others,
I talked with Jim D. a few days ago and letting you know now too: I cannot make it after all.
I am SO bummed. My parents are in a critical situation with Dad dying very soon. At first I felt self pity for missing out on the trip but of course I feel silly now with that notion. This is a time I've been called to duty and many of us go through that anyway at some point in life. Yeah its a burden but also an honor to serve such a great man right now.
So carry on and have a great time together. I'll be back at it this spring and hope we can arrange another Red Rocks get together. Really sorry to miss the slide show too.
Cheers,
Arne

Talked to Jim this morning, he's stoked and on the way in (might be here by now.) He's interested in climbing tomorrow if anyone has the time, I have to work so if you're free let me know and I will pass it along.
Bad news for me on the physical front...was trying to show off to the wife last night and demonstrate a door jam pull up and was rewarded with a loud POP from my right hand. Looks like I tore my A4 pulley.
Still going to climb this weekend, but after that it looks like I am probably going to be out for part of the winter season. I'm pretty bummed, but still stoked to meet and see everyone!

Willow Springs, frankly not my favorite place. Half of the stuff wants pro to 4,5,6 inches, which is not my thing. And the other half says "delicate pro, fragile rock" or some such. Here is my guidebook notation for a route I led there called kemosabe: "hideous death route".
Obviously I'm exaggerating. I'll join you there if I don't have another plan and I appreciate the invite.
Wml have you been to the Flight Path area of Pine Creek? That looks like it might be good for cragging with a reasonably short approach.

There is a route to the right of kemo sabe that is pretty good, but it isn't in the book. Lie Detector (5.6) Wendell Broussard, 1978. 3 pitches, the second is more of a belay transfer then a pitch. Third pitch is a full squeeze chimney, very fun.
I haven't made it out to Flight Path but there is a lot of stuff there that looks fun. Brass Wall is nice too.

Back home, it was loads of fun. After experiencing ST get togethers at COR and RR, i propose we set up a schedule of regular events that will allow people to meet personally, climb together, pass on knowledge and, best of all, tell tall tales around the campfire.
I am definetly going to organize one for IC next late April/early May. A good selection might be:
Fritz's late June COR event.
Spring Indian Creek.
Weston's fall RR meeting.
Having climbed at Shuteye Ridge i also think that it would be a good venue for those who are limited by travel.

Weston, next year I vote to move the event to early or mid October. I know you don't want to crowd the Facelift dates, but it's probably a different crowd. And by October the monsoons are usually done, there are more hours of daylight and the north facing cliffs can be perfect. When it's 100 degrees in LV, the climbing on BV is great.

Donini: per your suggestion, we are booked at COR Twin Sisters group site, nights of June 21- June 25 with checkout on Friday June 26. I'll start a thread on the subject one of these days.
I'm looking forward to seeing last years participants, and a few more folks that like to have fun, and are willing to attend without pets, politcal agendas, or small children.
Campsite size is limited to 30 people, and level tent sites are more limited than that.

W.L.,
You are the Pieter Bruegel of climbing photography. I finally noticed that, alone and forgotten up in the corner of that shot of Chris and his shoes, there I am on Topless Twins, like Landscape with the Fall of Icarus.
Musee des Beaux Arts
W. H. Auden
About suffering they were never wrong,
The old Masters: how well they understood
Its human position: how it takes place
While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along;
How, when the aged are reverently, passionately waiting
For the miraculous birth, there always must be
Children who did not specially want it to happen, skating
On a pond at the edge of the wood:
They never forgot
That even the dreadful martyrdom must run its course
Anyhow in a corner, some untidy spot
Where the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturer's horse
Scratches its innocent behind on a tree.
In Breughel's Icarus, for instance: how everything turns away
Quite leisurely from the disaster; the ploughman may
Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry,
But for him it was not an important failure; the sun shone
As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the green
Water, and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen
Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky,
Had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on.

Another event you might want to add to the "Supertopo Get Togethers" - which I think is an awesome idea - would be Woodfest, if it continues.
With the size of the community we have here, having annual get togethers is a great way to get to actually meet, climb and I think things like this make our "little" group even stronger.

Phyl- You are absolutely right. The photo shop got hijacked, and a new agenda was placed by a third party... ;) I promise it will happen soon.
Here's some campfire photos from the first night.
Vegasclimber talking to Burch while Skcreidc enjoys the fire.
Javi, Vegas, and Mark listening to Burchey spin another tale.

Large mike! Thanks for posting up, love the night shots. So much burchey, though - that guy is probably eating it up. What an egomaniac!
Next thing you know, he'll be posting a bunch of selfies ;)
