My son waited until the last minute to let me know he'd like to do some trout fishing before heading back to college. Fortunately I can take a couple of days late next week for the purpose. So I'd like to take him somewhere in striking distance of SF, where a few hours of hiking will get us to a nice spot to fish (lake, stream, or both) and bivvy. Since I haven't done much of this, I would really appreciate some advice. (If you don't want to post advice about places here, but would be willing to share it with me, I'd be grateful if you'd contact me by PM.)

Mono Hot Springs has some good fly fishing (spinning and fly casting). It is a great place, but the last few miles of road takes a while. Definitely worth the trip.

From SF out to Mono Hotsprings, I'd budget 6-7 hours. 5 is possible if the stars align perfectly (e.g. no traffic in/out of SF bay, not stuck behind slow pokes on the one-lane road beyond Huntington Lake).
Shaver Lake to Huntington Lake is at least 30 minutes, then out to Mono Hotsprings is at least another hour if you are moderately fast and no impeding traffic on the one-lane road shared for both directions. Great spot to feel like you are backpacking in the boonies while still being near a car.

The Delta is the one place I have fished a bunch; used to have a boat when the boy was small. We're looking for more of a wilderness experience this time. Mono Hot Springs it is! We'll do the backpacking thing next time, if this rings a chord with him.

Go to Northern Canada. Throw some kind of hook in the water. Reel in dinner.
Simple.

Yeah, that's what my father in law told me. They lived in Yellow Knife and he said that that ruined him for fishing elsewhere.

Leavitt Canyon. Park at the last campground on 108 and work your way down the canyon until you can hike the road out.

Well this went well last year. Leavitt was running too strong, so we hiked out to lakes nearby.
Next weekend my now 21yo is up for another such outing, and I'd again be really grateful for advice. Here's what would be ideal: somewhere within striking distance of SF, then 4ish hours from the trailhead, with a nice spot to camp and fish for a couple of days, and, here's the new thing, near a trail or trails on which he can actually get running miles in.

Suprema, I have done quite of bit of float tubing in WA. The best I have done has been on the East side on small lakes. It is really easy to get blown across the lake on the bigger ones. I have always done good at Grimes lake early in the season. Wait a bit past the opener to avoid crowds. Dry Falls is good too. Some good lakes near Beverly but very buggy.

No pics, sorry. I don't fish for Salmon around here anymore but when I did it was on the Olympic Peninsula rivers and I used home-made spinners. Same with trout, ultra light with home made spinners or trolling flies in a tube.
