lots of variety among bromeliad.
try that. blooms once, captures water and nutrients in the leaf-cups, roots just cling on. happy b-day!

Your first plant is the tropical plant Alpina purpurata, or awapuhi-'ula'ula or red ginger, which grows in the Isles of Hawai'i, among other places.

according to our needy perception.
we move an inch away from the world
and it awaits our return.
but when we reverse that inch we
find that our world is miles to the right.
i suspect that the flowers enjoy
a similar plurality.
they go and the come and
the bees they sit in their version of a pub
and lament the blurry smile
painted of the stars.
