Way back in 1975, I started a lead on the East Ridge of Bugaboo Spire, while Chris leaned back comfortably on the pack he hadn't bothered to take off.


A few feet above him, I looked down and realized that if I fell, I would likely be impaled on the ice axe spike protruding above his pack. I politely, but somewhat tensely requested he remove the pack.

After doffing the pack, he looked up again, spit some chew, and said: "On belay, See you in Hell."

First time I'd ever heard that fine safety quote.
