We are heading to So. Yos. for 2 weeks in August .. we have Fresno dome,
Shuteye etc. on the radar and are super stoked. Should we buy bear canisters ? which are best ? any tips/ thoughts on food storage is
appreciated.

Also , any must do routes/formations you would recommend ?

Thanks in advance and I know.......

you can rent them in yosemite. Yes get a bear can. Barikades are the lightest and very expensive. I use bear vaults as they are cheaper. Yosemite rents our garcias which are on the heavy side. They all work equally well. There is also bear boxer and some other one where the lid doubles as a plate or something wierd like that.

No, you wont die anymore.

Not a bad idea, but in many years of visiting SoYo, my friends and I have never had or heard of any bear raids.

You can hardly go wrong with any climbs in the region. If it looks good, it typically is good. Don't even heed the star ratings. The only area where you might be disappointed is if you are jonesing for continuous mulit-pitch pure splitters.

if you're car camping, you do not need bear cans.

Bearikade. Pricey, but light.

An Ursack is light and cheaper, if a canister is not required. Good to keep small critters out, too.

They are kinda heavy. In that price range I'd get a Bear Vault.

I've seen bears many times around SoYo but not at Shuteye. I've seen at least two this year. I've never had trouble with them. Like all areas where bear hunting is allowed, the bears there seem to have a healthy and normal fear of people. In May one that didn't see us practically walked into camp one afternoon. As soon as he did see us, he ran off at full speed never to be seen again.

But then I can't promise you won't have bear trouble.

I have seen one bear in 6 or so years of visiting the area.

Bear raids are not something to be concerned over.

Good threads about bear canisters. I don't think they are allowed in YNP (soft ones)
