Wow, great that he's alive.
So good to have good SAR in this situation - life saved!
Also a reminder of one of the risks of going solo - nobody to
go get help if you get unlucky with a loose block (cell phones don't always have reception, etc.).
Good thing he had an itinerary.
Gregory Hein, the 33 year old hiker last seen on July 3rd, has been located. Earlier tonight, shortly after 7:00pm, ground searchers found Hein near Davis Lake at an elevation of over 10,000 feet.
Hein had become incapacitated due to a broken leg. SAR personnel stabilized him and he was extricated from the area. Hein is currently being flown to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment.
It is now believed Hein made his hike to Mt Goddard, and injured himself on the way back down. He may have been injured for several days.
Several SAR members are still in the search area and will remain there overnight until they can be extricated tomorrow. http://abc30.com/news/missing-hiker-from-clovis-has-been-found-alive/176362/

And that is why you leave an itinerary if you care about those that care
about you, right? I'm happy for him as it ain't much fun lying on the side
of a mountain hoping the Mounties will find you. It's not a really exclusive
club but it doesn't have a long waiting list, either. And the dues suck.

Awesome.
All because others knew where he was going and when he expected to be back,
probably the single most important part of any solo mission.

Jefe's right. People knew where to look b/c he laid out his trail to others.
But it was my prayer that got him found...hehehe. Glad he's o.k.!!!

I'm sure glad he was found. All it takes is one missed step and you're a world of hurt. This one ended well.

Props to SEKI rangers and SAR.
Is there a system in California where you can let some one know what you are doing when you have no one to tell?
Not so much a system, but a good protocol:

I am happy for you and him. It is that time of year - when rock and snow mix, when the backcountry opens up. We have had quite a few calls recently, too. Always nice to get early notification and have a plan. Hate those calls where we spend the first day or two looking for the trailhead they may have parked at.

I visited Gregg in the hospital yesterday and he is in good spirits. A true hardman. The Fresno Bee story of his ordeal was told by his mother. Gregg's own story is incredibly way more intense. He crawled down 1,000 to get off the slope of Goddard, then crawled a mile to Davis Lake....with a compound fib/tib fracture....with a bone sticking out of the skin for those not familiar with a compound fracture. He lay for 4 days....with a bone sticking out of his leg. UGH! He used little icicles from the snowpack to clean it to help prevent infection, which it did and doctors say he has a 10-20% chance he'll lose the leg.
He fell and broke his leg on a Saturday and was rescued on Thursday evening. Gregg said that by Friday he would start to crawl out....20 miles back to Florence Lake.
He is thankful for all of the love, thoughts, and prayers from everyone.
