I was wondering how the guy got there; no mention of that on the news.
Still, he just lost his nerve...he was doing a pretty impressive job up until then. It does not appear he is even wearing climbing shoes.

I wonder whether upon starting up he was thinking (a) "I'll just climb up a bit, have a look-see, then climb back down" or (b) "I'm gonna top out this chosspile".
It had to have been either (a) or (b); there is no (c).

Aww, leave the guy alone. Stupid? Of course. That's speaking the obvious, and no-one knows it better than this guy. And he absolutely should be responsible for the rescue costs, and issue an apology & appreciation to the guys who safely picked him off.
How many of us in our ignorant early years of climbing found ourselves in similar predicaments, but lucked out enough to find a way out, with only our egos bruised?
Yeah, it was stoooopid. But as some have observed, there's an awful lot of greybeards here who are pretty damn quick to make chortling sanctimonious commentary of n00bs like this. That's not particularly flattering.

Thanks Apogee, once again. Right on. This is partly just another case of fat-shaming someone and of course it's someone we will never meet.
My closest climbing partner back in the day and still today started his august climbing career being rescued by rangers at Pinnacles as a teenager. He had wandered up Machete Ridge without benefit of equipment, know-how or a informed partner. He went on to lead 5.12X up until the early 2000's and was a prominent guide for nearly twenty years. Doug Robinson was also rescued on Pywiack Dome as a kid; he did the same Honnoldy thing of just "climbing". It is hard to stop, you know; it is so fun just to launch away.
What is with the feeding frenzy here, Pilgrims? You sound like a bunch of hags at a pie bake-off, as Terence Stamps parries in Priscilla Queen of the Desert. It is amazing how far the rescued guy got too.

Bubbles, or we always bring up the great John Donne. Extremely high level gutsy Brit climber but truly a big boy too.
I think there is something of course utterly ridiculous about climbers pillorying this guy for being so dumb as to get in trouble this way when, however stupid his outing was. His motive was made of some of the same stuff that brings us all to climb.
Honnold talks about his earliest gym visit where his parents' attention was diverted briefly and next thing they knew their very young Alex was most of the way up one of the gym walls unroped and of course unvetted as well.
I have rescued totally informed climbers who basically didn't need help but thought they did. That's a common situation. But if they think they do, it is a good indication they probably should be rescued as their mental wherewithal has dissipated to a perilous minimum.
I will admit it does make a unique video and sure it's funny since we know he comes out okay.

Man rescued after Tallac fall
A 19-year-old man used his cell phone on Sunday to call for help after slipping on ice and falling face first several feet down Mount Tallac.
Alex Honnold of Carmichael suffered face abrasions and a concussion from the fall, which happened at around 10:30 a.m. He was found at about 12:30 p.m. and flown to Washoe Medical Center in Reno...
...While snowshoeing alone, Honnold apparently lost his footing and fell, and was briefly unconscious before using his cell phone to call his mother. His mother then called the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department.
A California Highway Patrol and a CalStar helicopter were dispatched to look for Honnold. He was spotted by CalStar, and the California Highway Patrol helicopter landed on the side of the mountain to pluck him to safety, said El Dorado County Sheriff's Sgt. Larry Olsen.....

The guy was outdoors haveing an adventure. kudos for that. sorry it did not work out for him but hope he does not give up on the outdoor life.
