...is going to England?

I just read of this. My interest in cycling is less than in years past. I've watched the tour in person, and grew up in a road racing family, but given all the recent and not so recent debate over drugs, I'm following it with halfhearted interest.

But England? Why the change? Are the Brits that cycle oriented?

Also, looking forward to the Tour of Colorado, I might have to make the trip out there to visit my dad in Westminster around that time.

Le Tour was in the UK in 1994 as well.

I had no idea.

No hate for England here, I was just surprised. I guess, upon further thought, that I shouldn't be surprised. Le Tour heads into Espana on a regular basis.

Skinny dopers on bikes followed by their "doctors" and "trainers"?
Nope.

Tour de France 2012 winner, Bradley Wiggins, UK
Tour de France 2013 winner, Chris Froome, UK

If you look at the last two Olympic Games there have been quite a few golds for Team GB both for men and women so yes cycling is pretty big in the UK right now.

For sure Andy, Brits are doing well in the tour lately. I'm wondering if the general populace is as stoked on it as the fans are.

I think the Brits will turn out in large numbers to watch this, if the weather cooperates. Also, it should see some good racing on narrow, winding and undulating roads.

Sobering graphic there.

History of TDF starts abroad before entering France for the bulk of the race, which has become a pretty regular thing:

1954 Amsterdam, Netherlands

1958 Brussels, Belgium

1965 Cologne, Germany

1973 Scheveningen, Netherlands

1975 Charleroi, Belgium

1978 Leiden, Netherlands

1980 Frankfurt, Germany

1982 Basel, Switzerland

1987 West Berlin, West Germany

1989 Luxembourg

1992 San Sebastián, Spain

1996 ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands

1998 Dublin, Republic of Ireland

2002 Luxembourg

2004 Liège, Belgium

2007 London, United Kingdom

2009 Monte Carlo, Monaco

2010 Rotterdam, Netherlands

2012 Liège, Belgium

2014 Leeds, United Kingdom

It's just the first 3 stages. They do that regularly. Sometimes they have stages in Belgium, sometimes they go to Germany for a few. Fun stuff. Looking forward to watching it every night!

A side note - we'll be thinking of Pat (Can't Say) as we watch, a cyclist extraordinaire...

Looking forward to this tour even though MOVISTAR has chosen not to race Nairo Quintana. After his convincing win in the Giro it looks like they are wisely pacing his career. I'm sure we'll see him in the Vuelta.

It really is the Greatest athletic event of the year all broadcast on Live TV

I largely agree. And the doping doesn't bother me all that much, as everyone suffers, doped or not

I love the sport, and the Tour de France is the highlight of the Year
Amen Dr. F. I love the Tour. One day I actually hope to see some of it in person.

I don't really get the animosity demonstrated toward doping in cycling when society has turned a collective blind eye to doping/cheating in other sports.

It is to bad they are flat stages in the UK.Still damn cool.

Would like to see them race near the Highlands,up north, make them suffer through some Scottish weather.

Edit;Dr.F,I will work on that.

More doped up egos in spandex than Smith Rock in the 80s!

Quite the false statement . . . most of today's top riders are quite humble and respectful. Ego will not get your body through the Tour . . . it is a gruelfest. You don't know what your yammering about fool.

Get the fuk outta this thread crankster . . . you don't know sh#t about this.

That's not my quote. I know more about the TDF than you. Been to it twice as spectator. Followed it when u were on a tricycle. Was Lance's biggest defender. No
more.
Have your fun, I'm not raining on your parade.

That's not my quote, idiot.

If you read carefully, I did not attribute the quote to you Mr. TDF . . . I was responding to your lame post in the following sentence.

Jeebus, I was not alluding to any hero worship . . . simply respecting the effort it takes to complete a Tour.
